Duvet and pillow for toddler?

Hi, 1 year old ds currently sleeps in a grow bag on top of a fitted sheet with blanket on top tucked in securely as he has done since birth. I’ve noticed he is outgrowing his sleep bag despite it being sized 18-24 months (he’s very tall.) I’ve heard after 12 months it’s safe to introduce a thin quilt but not sure on the guidelines for an actual duvet that requires a duvet cover. When is it safe to introduce a pillow and duvet? When did you introduce the latter? Thanks everyone.

You can get bigger Grobags if you want to keep him in one. I think we have one that goes up to three. The advantage is that they keep legs tucked in during all the thrashing about, which I reckon helps with sleep.

Do you have to graduate him to a quilt already?

Ds is growing out of the sleep bags now and he isn’t comfortable any more in them, he’s getting all twisted and waking up because of it.

Why rain I though guideline said quilt after 12 months is safe? Is this not the case? This is why I need some advice on bedding for toddlers 😃

DS was 18 months when he graduated to a duvet, DD will be the same. Handy as it coincides with summer too!

Hi, 4 tog duvets are recommended for toddlers. My son started using his at 18 months, he loves tucking himself in xx

I did it just 1. Mainly because she worked out how to unzip them, and would happily spend first 15 mins in bed releasing herself. I got a toddler duvet- it’s 4 tog, and a pillow. SHe often wriggles out of the duvet- I just dress her warmly- she has socks and vest under pjs when it’s cold.
I got bored with trying to get her to sleep in the grobag.

Thanks everyone, that’s good to know . I think I will transition ds to a thin quilt in the summer and see how he gets on. I’ll maybe then upgrade again to an Ikea toddler duvet and thin pillow once I convert his cot to a toddler bed when he’s abit older

A tip with pillows - you can always put them under the fitted sheet to start with if you are worried they might end up with their head underneath it!

We gave DS a pillow at 12 months and he's slept so much better. I've held back on the duvet until Summer but I may wait until he's not happy in his sleeping bag anymore as I don't want to end up with situations where he's waking because he's kicked the duvet off and is cold.
We bought the fogerty set from mothercare which fits the combed perfectly!

Cutesbabasmummy what an amazing idea, thank you, I will do that. I might get a pillow soon as he isn’t sleeping great at the moment. I saw some good value bedding in Ikea. I think a trip on the weekend is in order Smile

My little boy had one from quite young to help with a head shaping issue - only very very minor- and I really was scared! When it's under the fitted sheet it doesn't really move around either . Hope your little one likes his pillow xx

Thank you so much Cutes, that’s really good to know. I think there’s so many rules and regulations it has me worried about every little thing! I’m going to get the pillow on the weekend. Hopefully ds will spend more time in his cot at night and sleep better (fingers crossed.) He’s been really fussy ever since his imms too and we all need a good nights sleep. Thanks again x Smile

they are guidelines not rules Grin

Do what you feel is best, there is no reason why he cant have a toddler duvet and pillow at 1yo unless you feel for some reason he wouldn't cope with it.

My DD started with a 4.5 tog toddler duvet in the middle of winter at about 11.5 months old and took to it quite well. 4.5 tog seems more than warm enough for her but she wears pyjamas and a vest in bed too.

We moved my DS to a duvet and pillow when we took the side off the cot when he was about 22 months . It was summer though and he mostly just slept on top of it. It took him a few months to figure it out, but he’s been properly under the duvet with head on the pillow for a good few months now

I made the switch and ds has been much more comfortable and isn’t half as restless as he was in his sleep bag. Much happier little one. Thanks everyone Smile
