What would you expect them to do? Procedure etc?

He fell quite badly and was bleeding.

It should be put in the accident book but as far as I’m aware they don’t have to provide first aid to someone who is not a member of staff.

Eeeeek2 · 22/02/2018 23:10

Offer assistance, first aided if one was available, call ambulance if required. Take contact details to make further enquiries about what happened at a later time so the parent could concentrate on the child at that point

Context?

Wakeuptortoise · 22/02/2018 23:12

Eh? Was s/he alone?

halcyondays · 22/02/2018 23:13

Most public places would have a first aider who would help or suggest you sought medical help if it was more serious.

GreenTulips · 22/02/2018 23:13

Naff all -- not so much as a wipe or plaster or even a staff member with any sympathy.....

gamerchick · 22/02/2018 23:13

Need more detail

tvhearts · 22/02/2018 23:15

No he's fine thank goodness, but they didn't take any details other than my phone number. Said you "you should definitely go to minor injuries/A&E" (we did and all is absolutely fine) but they didn't phone or anything just wondering if that is standard procedure? Ahh not even sure what I wanted them to do really but just with the benefit of hindsight thinking the staff weren't exactly great 😕

EveningShadows · 22/02/2018 23:17

Wow, what did he cut himself on?! Shock

BackforGood · 22/02/2018 23:18

I wouldn't have expected them to phone.
Not really sure why they would? Confused

Eeeeek2 · 22/02/2018 23:18

By the way a supermarket doesn't need to have a first aider. They're not considered a high risk workplace, they need an appointed person who's only responsibilities are check the first aid box and ringing for an ambulance.

LovingLola · 22/02/2018 23:18

It depends. Were you watching him when he had the accident/incident? Was it negligence on the supermarket's behalf?

tvhearts · 22/02/2018 23:19

Sorry probably sound like OTT mother here but nothing like this happened to us before so just wondering what other peoples thoughts are. He was running alongside the trolley on our way out but slipped over. It was quite a bad fall bless him xx

I was in a supermarket recently and a baby - of 11 months - was in a trolley, unsecured, and managed to stand up in the seat and topple out head first while his father was looking at firelighters!!

tvhearts · 22/02/2018 23:20

No he just tripped, thanks for your input everyone really appreciate it. Just glad he's ok xx

My daughter fell in a supermarket and the first aider offered ice and some advice. No paperwork and no follow up. I was happy with that as they were kind and there wasn’t any reason for the fall (3 year old).

Eeeeek2 · 22/02/2018 23:21

Unless he fell over on a puddle that they hadn't cleared up, I'd put it down to normal for kids to fall over sometimes.

tvhearts · 22/02/2018 23:21

OMG @LovingLola 🤦🏼‍♀️ no we were just excited to be leaving the shop haha he just sort of stumbled but was unlucky with how he fell x

Was it negligence on the supermarket's behalf?

That should have on being on being offered basic first aid/care

OP I'm sure things would've been different in M&S

ArnoldBee · 22/02/2018 23:32

If there was a failure by the supermarket I would expect more. What you have described sounds like something that could easily have happened at the park or walking along the pavement. My expectations therefore would be along those lines of parents seeking medical assistance if required.

gluteustothemaximus · 22/02/2018 23:40

I've seen several ambulances outside tesco over the years generally for an elderly person who's fallen.

I think in this case it wasn't serious enough for ambulance, but must have been serious enough for them to suggest A&E.

Just some basic kindness and sympathy wouldn't go amiss. Helping you with your shopping to your car as an example while you held your upset little boy. Not so much policy, just kindness.

Hope he's ok.
