Rugby match with baby?

pomadas87 · 21/02/2018 21:33

Wondering if we would be insane to take DD to the rugby (6 nations) when she is 12 weeks old...

  • will it be far too loud for her even with ear defenders?
  • most ear defenders I've found online are for 3+ months - will she be okay at 12 weeks?
  • there are baby changing facilities etc but is it just not that sensible idea anyway? She would be on mine or DH's front in the carrier the whole time

Unfortunately can't get childcare as she's refusing a bottle still so I won't leave her. Tempted to suggest DH just goes on his own and gives my ticket to a friend.

Does anyone have any advice?

Try emsforbubs ear defenders, we took our 3 month old to a local festival and these ear defenders are suitable from birth, he was snoozing away during bands with them on.

Hopefully the link works, I'm sure they can be bought on Amazon too

Thanks!
Do you know what makes them suitable from birth? Is it the elastic and ones for older babies are more rigid?

Been to several rugby matches both pregnant and with a younger DS and he was fine and have seen many a baby strapped to a chest.

Generally, I've found rugby fans to be helpful, kind and ushering you to the front of the queue if you have a little one. And then looking non plussed when pregnant lady bought three pints

I wouldn’t have even thought about the noise Blush.

But one of the good things about little babies is that you can take them anywhere.

Also, get them into rugby early and they then go watch any match you want to see. And a few you don't... DS now playing and I have to be on the touch line in the wind and rain

Is 12 weeks not three months anyway.

I would have an issue at all. They’ll be fine.

My DS went to his first international when he was 5 months. It was fine, there were three other babies near us and no one batted an eye. Enjoy.

The noise issue depends on the stadium. Mullennium is the worst because the design keeps the noise in. Twickenham, Stade de France and Murrayfield are much more open and athletics tracks at SDF and MF mean noise escapes and it is not so bad.

Haven't been to the Aviva yet.

Our DS went to his first match at 9 days but it was a club match so much smaller crowd and we had hospitality access so it was easier.

They are never too young for rugby!

I believe the head straps for the newborn ear defenders have to be softer so that they don't damage the fontanelle.

We took dd to a football match when she was about that age and she slept all the way through. We did bother with the ear defenders in the end.

Sorry should say didn’t bother with ear defenders.

Thanks - it's the Calcutta Cup at Murrayfield so pretty noisy!
Someone has suggested the wax ear plugs that you mould with your fingers but I'm worried about putting stuff in DD's ears.. will look again at the baby ear defenders

If she's in a sling she will probably be protected from the noise to some extent by your body as well. I would go, enjoy!

I think you'll be fine. Not sure how the baby changing facilities will be though? Which stadium are you going to? You might have to come prepared for changing on a lap or a bench.

Buy a baby supporters woolly hat. This will reduce noise, as will a sling. Two of ours went to an air show at three months with a Harrier landing close by.

Take her for sure. Take advantage of her sleeping on you and enjoy! Might be easier with a backpack for changebag.

Sorry, x post. I've always found Murrayfield pretty noisy tbh. Partic for the England game! Deffo check out the ear defenders.

Actually working a four nation match this Sunday (worked Scotland vs France too). See 3 or 4 parents every game with a baby strapped to their chest, they usually have earmuffs/earplugs of some kind and look happy as - parents rarely look flustered however check the stadium policy on what you're allowed to bring in diaper bag wise. Don't bring a stroller, I've seen people in wheelchairs accidentally knocked over by the rush of the crowd at the end of the match. Think at age 3 or 4 is when I'd begin to be a bit wary of bringing a kid to a match as at that point you can no longer carry them the entire time and the noise can get a bit scary for them. Baby will just sleep through it. DP is planning on taking our STA baby to her first NFL match in October in London when she will be roughly 6 months old (told him if he's paying that much for a ticket he may as well take her). The original agreement was that the only way in hell he'd get to go would be if his underdog team The Eagles played (they've not come to the UK in the many years he's been supporting them). Announced before the super bowl that they'd be coming so we're making a weekend of it. Not worried one bit, he'll take sensible precautions and knows he's not to drink, I'll be off to the advertising and brand museum to enjoy myself and meet up with them by dinnertime.

It's the elastic band on the emsforbubs that makes them suitable from birth as it doesn't rest on the soft spot on head, we were recommended them when we were looking for some for the festival as I found the normal ones were only recommended from 6months which were too old at the time we needed them.
We used them at the firework display and at a baby rave when he started getting sleepy & will be using them again for the festival this year as they are suitable up to 18months, so for us they weren't just a one of purchase that were never used again.

We took DD to Murrayfield when she was 7 months old , she got a bit scared at the start when the players were coming out as there was so much clapping etc, but other than that was fine. We just had a hat over her ears.

The only thing I would say is we waited absolutely ages for a team afterwards, not ideal with a baby and it was chucking it down. So I would either get out a bit early or hang about Haymarket for dinner!
