When should I get them? DS 13 months. He is walking but not outside yet. Can walk the length of the kitchen diner and into living room. Balance isn't perfect but he's mastering it.

When should I get his new shoes?

I got my dd her first shoes a couple
Of weeks after she started walking, she didn't have them on for long periods but I wanted her to be able to go outside etc. I got them properly fitted at Clarks

Mine walked outside as soon as they walked inside so I got them then.

There is no need for shoes until they are walking outside. Clarks would love you to go and buy ‘pre-walker’ shoes, because they want your money, but barefoot is best, so I’d leave it until they need them for outdoors. Their feet grow quickly, so they’ll need a new pair before long.

Thanks, everyone. He's been more mobile this week and walking for longer periods so think we will get him some this weekend as he's wanting to get out of his buggy.

We were advised 6 weeks after their first steps but it was spring and she could walk without shoes

I was told not to get them until your child needed them to walk in outside, and to remove them when they were inside - barefoot as much as possible.

What everyone else said. When he needs them for walking outside. The general advice is to wait for about 6 weeks, but please get them properly fitted. Clarks or any independent shoe shop that properly fits children's shoes. Don't buy supermarket shoes off the rack.

This article may be old, but the advice still holds today.

Thanks, again everyone. We got some from Clark's today. He's growing too quickly!
