Has your baby been circumcised for medical reasons?

Just looking for a little reassurance.

I'm off to the doctors with ds (8 months) this afternoon. He seems to be permanantly sore around the tip of his penis. It's sometimes better and sometimes worse.

I've been managing it at home thus far but again yesterday it was particularly red and swollen again. It's basically been red to varying degrees since he was a tiny baby. At times I've bathed it in salt water, etc.

DH was circumcised as a youngster (around 4) due to medical issues and I'm worried DS might be going the same way. This is the first time I've gone to the doctors about it because I've not really thought anything of it (dismissed it as normal) until a friend spotted it during a nappy change and said it wasn't normal.

Do you think they'd circumcise? How bad does it have to be? Should I be pushing for it? I have no idea!!
basically this whole post is just to say "my poor baby...."

Yes DS at 3.

They have to be very very VERY sure there is a medical need and it's not for cultural reasons. DS went at least 5 times with infected foreskin. It was leaking green pus, red and he was in so much pain. His foreskin would literally balloon when he urinated.

Consultant agreed it needed doing. It was a day op and he was home that afternoon. Never had another problem

Yes DS is now 11 and had a circumcision at 3. Similar reasons to other poster. We went to a consultant and he just took one look at DS - it was so sore, ballooned when weeing, painful for him. The circumcision was under general anaesthetic and the worst bit was not being able to give him food on the day when he was so hungry. He was nil by mouth from waking up at 6 and his surgery was at 1 pm! poor thing. The recovery was straight forward but quite painful for him. I am very confident that we had no other option, as the specialist was so confident in his decision. they don't make that decision lightly. Nobody questioned our religion or cultural practices, it was a clear medical need.

That's interesting. DS doesn't sound as bad as that. I've managed to avoid any infections so far but whether that's because he's ok or because of how i've been treating it, I have no idea. It's definitely not for any cultural or religious reasons. I haven't noticed his foreskin balloon but it just looks so red all the time.

My little boy suffers with this. I went to the dr and we use a canesten type (lower percentage) cream that was prescribed. Sorts it out overnight every time. Now his foreskin is more mobile he has fewer episodes.

My son was circumcised aged 8 due to recurrent balanitis caused by a very tight foreskin. There are steroid creams that can be used before deciding on surgery. Now one year on he has no issues.

theres look like that's exactly what's going on. The doctor has prescribed some anti fungal cream. I'm hoping this is going to tackle it.

Found out from.my in-laws that both DH and his two cousins had the same problem and all needed an op.

The doctor wants me to work out whether he 'blows up' when he wees. Easier said than done with a baby in a nappy!
