Baby on board signs??

Cupcakemumma123 · 23/04/2017 17:58

Genuinely interested in what people see the point of these 'baby/ children on board' signs to be?? I've always wondered this and no one can give me an answer, and it's really starting to bug me!
Is it like 'I've got children in my car so please don't crash into me??'. If so then this seems ridiculous...and also fairly pointless.
I'm a parent and a driver so wondering if I'm missing something glaringly obvious?
Thanks Smile

So that emergency services know there's a child in the car if you're in a smash.

I don't know.

We have never had one, dd is 6yo.

Some say it is to help emergency services - but i'm sure they'd look for a child seat rather than a crappy sun-bleached sticker in a possibly broken window!

Ha cross-post!

I don't think that is the reason, I'm sure plenty of people drive without their child being in the car and they don't take the sticker off
I think emergency services rely on their eyes rather than a sticker

So that emergency services know there's a child in the car if you're in a smash.

And waste time looking for a child when the driver didn't have a child passenger but still had the sticker up.

Totally pointless.

The story I heard (which I don't know had any truth in it) is that there was a crash that involved a car seat being flung from the car and the emergency services didn't know there was a baby involved.
A fireman then came up with the idea of the sticker things so everyone would know to keep their eyes open.
As I said not sure if that is true or how really effective it really would be.

Sorry total x-post!!

No it's nothing to do with emergency services. I think Snopes have something on that.
It is just the "Ooh don't crash into me"

That's ridiculous because no one takes the baby on board sign down during the journeys when the baby is not there so half the time they are lying, and as there is no obligation to use them the emergency services would make no assumptions either way about presence or absence of a baby whether or not such a sign is displayed.

It could just about be meaning "forgive me for my unreasonable behaviour of not exceeding the speed limit or skipping through the traffic lights on amber if you are stuck behind me. Due to my status as a parent I drive safely and obviously if you are close enough to read this sign you must not be a careful driver so must be about to explode with road rage in my general direction."

I presume it's just something that people buy for new parents who're feeling all proud of themselves being parents so that they can tell the world. No practical purpose.

This is interesting...

Apparently paramedics do look for babies in a crash if there's one if those signs.

It's to warn people, I may pull over with no warning as my little sod darling has managed to undo her belt and is can canning on the parcel shelf or I'm driving erratically as my moronic sweet teens are fighting in the back seats and fucking my head and I am trying really hard to be calm and concentrate but Jesus god above they are playing different songs trying to outdo each other while lecturing me on how my generation has screwed their future and I've been driving for 3 hours with this crap !

Or just for the emergency services like above Grin

They're cringey.

As are the little people family stickers.

My dh works for the emergency services. He says they pay no attention to them at and that they serve no purpose. It's just one more thing to waste money on as a first time parent imo

I certainly don't take any notice of the signs and I've never heard of any of my colleagues who do either. It's not something we're taught to do at all.

My sister has one saying 'little princess on board' - it's definitely not there for the emergency services. That won't have crossed her mind. I think it's probably like PPs said, so she can boast about her ability to conceive. Because clearly she is the first person to have ever achieved this!

I'm in the 'wanky' class. But they are nothing when compared to those 'entire family stick figure' jobbies. Wtaf?

Are they so the emergency crew think 'hang on! There's only 3 in this car! Where's the dad in a baseball cap and the boy with the football?'
