Baby no 2 on way and advice is needed!

Hi there,

We're expecting another baby girl in July. My current little girl is 14 months and sleeping lovely in her cot. When we want to move the new baby from her Moses basket to my current little girls cot, she will be 25 months.

We are buying furniture for our big girls new room and obviously want to buy her a bed. We are concerned that if we buy a toddler bed, she won't be big enough to fit in it. She's quite small for her age, but very advanced (fully walking and running). It's so long away, it's a big unknown. Part of me thinks she will get used to it quickly, the other part worries she will be so small and wriggly that she falls out!

My alternative is to get a cot bed. However, it is more expensive and feels pointless. Help!!

Thanks so much x

My DD went into a full size single bed at 17 months and she loves it (always refused a cot though Hmm). She's 75th centile though so not small. We use foam wedge bed guards which makes it a bit more snugglier for her.

So I'd say go for the bigger bed. A cot bed doesn't seem worth it in your situation.

Does that mean she can't climb out of it and cause mischief in her room? X

We were in the same boat...went for toddler bed. A couple of nights where DS rolled out of bed but no problems thereafter. I would even say he goes to sleep quicker and has a more settled night than he did in the cot which we considered him to be an excellent sleeper in!

Oo that's good to hear!

Go for a toddler bed. Even if they fall out they are so low to the ground it hardly matters! My two only fell out once or twice before they got the hang of it and DS2 was only 20 months.

Our DDs had a proper full (single) mattress on the floor. Worked well. We childproofed the room, including no shelves to climb up!

Mummy She could still climb out of it but so far (in almost 6 months), she never has. When she wakes up she just sits on her bed and waits for us to come in. We do still use a video monitor though so we can see if she's up and about.

Some toddler beds extend so they'll last longer. My main tip would be one with a built in rail/raised side near the head as part of the design. It meant we don't get any rolling out (though she still rolls out of a normal bed if she's in one) and didn't need to worry about an additional rail

Foam bed guard:

I would just put full size single mattress on floor for 6months if needed, then buy bed frame and add.
Toddler bed pointless really

We have a 2 year gap. We got this toddler bed for DS www.argos.co.uk/product/1873834
With the logic that as DD is ready to progress from cot to bed she can inherit that and DS can move up to a single bed at that point. Gets plenty of use that way.

We moved DS into the toddler bed before the baby was here on advice of some stuff I read, so he was used to it before baby came and there wasn't a feeling that baby was stealing his cot. By the time DS moved into for at 4 months he had completely forgotten it had been his.

We had 1 falling out incident (he occasionally sleeps upside down...) and we used a stair guard on his door invade of sleep walking (both DH and I are sleepwalkers...) and also incase he woke up disorientated and wandered. We still have that up but don't shut it, keeps the cat out of his room mainly.

Sorry typo means one line makes no sense

We also just put a normal single mattress on the floor. I didn't want to spend out on a toddler bed which we'd only use for a few years, but DD1 is 99th centile for height so you may get longer than we did from it. We moved her in at 20 months a few weeks before DD2 was born, and at the same time put on a stairgate, toddler proofed the room and got a gro-clock.

She's always got out of bed in the morning but she knows to look at books or toys until the sun comes up on her clock if she wakes before 7 and we change the toys in her room regularly so she doesn't get bored. It took her a few days to get used to it but now she loves being a big girl and being able to do more stuff herself.

Another recommendation for single mattress is that if they become unsettled with new baby, one of you can lie next to her comfortably to resettle. Plus recommend you move around 2 months before you baby due as then you aren't lifting a toddler In and out of a cot.
Like others said, add stairs gate to bedroom door and then room becomes a giant cot basically. And she's safe to play in room on her own which is super handy if your busy feeding newborn, she can get up and start playing 10 mins rather than stuck in cot screaming
