hello - i purchased the following car seat -

a Joie Gemm thats suitable from birth.

I'm not sure how you make it flat - i thought you have to keep a new born flat on their back for safety but this seems to be upright? am i being stupid?

Baby not born yet so would be good to know now before we need to use it!!

Thank you

No it doesn't lie flat, the baby is reclined. It's fine for babies to not be flat all the time, but should ideally only be in the carseat for 30 mins at a time so don't attach the car seat to the pram when out for the day etc.

I see, thank you - so slightly upright/reclined is safe?

and car journeys shouldn't be longer than 30 mins?

no they can be longer but ideally short. If longer than 30 mins consider sitting with them or stop regularly. the danger is positional asphyxiation so watch their heads don't slump so their airway stays open. Once they can hold their own head up this risk is greatly reduced, it's the first couple of months that's the most risky. As long as baby lies flat in their pram and cot, time in the car won't be a problem.

It's not upright, it's at a suitable recline level for baby. As previous posters have said journeys should be as short as possible and try not to use as a travel system unless the total time in seat is less than 30 mins. You do get a few completely lie flat car seats but I believe they are not as safe in the event of an accident. Gemm is a great car seat, I had one for my little boy.

Great to know Gemm comes recommended - and sure don't think there will be many long car journeys - but good to know this.

thank you so much

If you want a lie flat have a look at the jane matrix. Definitely reccomend it, you can lie flat up to 10kg and then sit it up for up to 13kg. It also has 2 in between heights for when its attatched to the pram. I like the fact o can happily leave my daughter asleep, and not have to worry about her. My nephew always liked really uncomfortable in his maxi cosi seat when he was little.
