10 month old getting up at 4 am

Why the fuck is my baby getting up this early every day? It's killing me. He goes to bed at 8 so is only getting 8 hours a night which cannot be enough. He barely naps during the day, maybe only a total of an hour made up of pointless little catnaps. I'm getting worried. He was sleeping 11 hours with up to 2 wake ups up to a few weeks ago.

What do you do when he wakes that early?

When my DS was that age his sleep was horrendous and over a 24 hour period he was only having 10-11 hours sleep which involved lots of wake-ups overnight and silly cat naps during the day. He never had any periods of substantial sleep and life was pretty miserable.

After many months of dealing with this and things getting worse we sleep trained at 10 months under the guidance of a sleep consultant.

I used to hate the phrase "he's overtired and that's why he doesn't sleep" because I didn't really understand it, I still don't if I'm honest, but I still believe it to be true.

Once DS started having a much better sleep at night (7.30pm-6am) he then started having proper naps in the day (2x 90 minute naps).

By the time we had finished the training he was getting about 14 hours sleep in a 24 hour period so it was much, much better for him.

We co sleep with dd2 who is 10 months and will also try to get up at that time if given half a chance. We just don't get up. White noise and cuddles (sometimes its more like holding her down!) and she will go back to sleep within about half an hour.

With dd1 I used to just get up (she was a terrible sleeper) but there is no way I could do that now. I'm 10 weeks pregnant and need my sleep!

I suspect his over tired.
Can you do bedtime at 6-6:30?
And anyway he naps in the day do it. Don't worry if it's on you etc. day sleep is different to night

Yeah, think we're going to have to do some kind of sleep training before I lose the plot. Unfortunately I can't put him to bed early as I don't get back from work until 6.30.

I've had problems with his naps since he was about 2 months old. He just will. not. nap. 45 minutes is a really good nap for him and they're more usually around 20 minutes long.

Can you not see your contradiction there?

Overtired is an unpleasant feeling.
A baby won't enjoy that unpleasant feeling and hence won't sleep

My point blonde was that I don't understand the concept (I.e my brain thinks that if a baby is overtired then surely they'd sleep because they're tired) but like I said, I know the theory is true.

It's a bit like when people say "It's too cold to snow" Grin
