Gap Year Travelling

My DS is talking about going travelling and as tempted as I am to hide his passport, or take the opportunity to have my Eat-Pray-Love phase at the same time, I know this will be one of the best decisions he'll ever make. I backpacked in my distant past, but the world seemed a much safer place then. I know I need to support him in this, but would appreciate some practical advice as to how I can best prepare him for anything going wrong (I've discounted my initial idea of 3 months intense lecturing from she-who-knows-everything) . I want him to have a wonderful time, but at the same time, I don't want to be worrying about him 24/7. Any advice or tips will be gratefully considered.

Well, where does he want to go? I would think that the advice would vary slightly from maybe one country to another.

You can lecture them until you're blue in the face, but stuff will happen, and he'll have to think on his feet a bit. Its all part of growing up!

You will worry about him, but at least there's email and FaceTime to reassure you that he's OK.

I say this as a mum of a DS who is having a gap year, too! I'm trying to keep a lid on my motherly panic... for the time being, anyway...
