4/5 week old baby with reoccurring constipation

Hi, just that really, my DS has struggled with constipation for a couple of weeks, grimacing, lots of wind but no poo's for a couple of days then rabbit dropping which seem to hurt then a big bottom explosion and he's comfortable for 24hrs or so and the cycle starts again. I've been giving him water intermittently but was wondering if a change in food is the best way to go? Anyone got any similar experiences? He is exclusively FF on aptamil, feeding well throughout, putting on weight etc Tia

Mine was the same. Had constipation and colic . The best thing I found was sugar water 2ml in morning and afternoon and it worked. Doctor suggested it and said the new thing was 'just water' he said that was because they were worried about people giving babies lots of sugar but he said it always worked. I tried it and it worked without fail 2 teaspoons diluted in 100ml of water and syringed 2 ml .

Thanks Suzy, my mum actually recommended the same but I was worried about giving him too much, 2ml doesn't sound like a lot at all though so will give it a go, thanks for replying.

Yeah that's why doctors suggest water only. But my doctor is "old fashioned" . It really works first time I tried it was in morning and by that evening omg she had erupted. I did again for a couple of days morning and evening then stopped and did it after that as and when. Some people say 12 hrs and you should have results others 24 mine was about 6.

Fab, I'm just congratulating myself on being prepared and buying calpol early as that comes with a syringe I can use. Going to give it a go for a week or so, horrible to see his beautiful little face in pain Sad

My ds was the same on SMA. Switched (gradually) to C&G and he had no problems.

To be honest he 'went' around the time of posting but I still gave him the sugar water before bed and this afternoon and now he's uncomfortable again and seems to be straining but it's only 24hrs since he was able to go... I will persevere with the water but may also try changing his food if it carries on...

I never realised that babies until a few months old get confused when pooing... They push and squeeze their bum hole shut at same time. Eventually they get the idea but it takes a while . Keep trying
