Severe nappy rash

Please help, my 5+1 has awful nappy rash Wendy is bleeding. Have been to GP and been prescribed metanium. However, just doesn't seem to be clearing. Using pampers nappoes. Any suggestions?

That's really bad if it's bleeding. Maybe go back to the GP if Metanium isn't working. It can be a bacterial infection which I think caneston can work on, but so if your little one is just 5 weeks old I'd definitely either go back to gp or call your hv.

It might be thrush. DD had that along with chickenpox when she was 10mo. It looks just like really bad nappy rash, but won't clear like a rash would. Be careful though- she was allergic to the canestan and it burnt all the skin off her bottom so I'd do a tester area first

Also try out some diff nappies in case its an allergy and give them lots of nappy free time.

Thanks whoami, I'll mention the thrush to GP. Was your DD's bleeding?

Are you using wipes to clean with? Or cotton wool and water?

I ask because using Pampers wipes on my DS gives him absolutely horrible diaper rash, but he is fine with other brands of wipes.

Thanks for the replies. I'm only now using cotton wool and water and at the last nappy change started using asda nappies rather than pampers. He seems well enough himself so the GP thinks that blood is coming from rash rather than from somewhere else.

Loads of people swear by metanium but I found Bepanthen worked better for ds1's bad nappy rash - it just seemed to act as better barrier.

The key is for the skin to be dry before you put it on so that the sore bits are protected from the poo. I'd be tempted to just dress your baby's top half and leave them uncovered on a towel as much as possible (messy but gives their poor bottom some time to heal). Obviously in a warm room.

Most normal nappies gave my DD a rash almost straight away. We switched to Beaming Baby nappies. Cotton wool is a pain, you could try washable wipes/thin flannels. Lots of no nappy time as well - paper or normal towel on the changing mat and just lie him on it for ages and ages. Hope he improves soon.

My DS had this (older than yours). Canestan cleared it. Keep going with it for a while after the rash goes. If it's really infected then they may give you fucidin as well.

Thank you everyone. He's napping now so will let him go nappy free as much as I can this afternoon. Have older DD who had nappy rash but never one that bleed.

My DD had really severe nappy rash and it turned out she had a Strep B infection as well as thrush. She needed topical creams and a round of antibiotics.

Took quite a few visits to HV and Gp before one did the swabs, though.

Incidentally, my DD also has very sensitive skin and was allergic to metanium. Best cream we've found was the E45 nappy rash cream.

I don't use Sudocrem on a daily basis but for any rash it seems good (when Metanium didn't seem to work).

Water wipes are very mild and gentle for this sort of thing, although more expensive.

Don't want to add to paranoia but is it worth also thinking about his forumla if he is not BF as this may be causing a reaction?

Many years ago dd1 had to have intravenous antibiotics for a couple of days when she was two weeks old.
She had the most awful nappy rash after which was bleeding like your baby.
The only thing which I found would work quickly was Vaseline.
It creates a barrier obviously but allows the sore skin to heal on it's own.

I did lots of nappy off time this afternoon to air his bottom. With the nappy off I think the blood was not coming from nappy rash. I'm combined feeding at the moment and I'm thinking he might have a milk intolerance. Will discuss with GP tomorrow.
