new mum need input on ready to feed newborn milk by cow & gate and the smell!

Hi everyone

My first baby is 16 days old and most of his feeds are from breast apart from one which is his pre-bed feed. We use cow & gate ready to feed newborn milk. Its a new addition to our routine (he loves his food and that feed done by my oh buys me some sleep!)

My question is is it normal for the ready to feed milk in the litre bottles to smell... well... bad? It almost smells like its on the turn. We opened a bottle yesterday and our little one had it and has had no issue but when i sniffed it this morning (no idea why i did!) i was tempted to throw it! Thought I'd check here first in case I'm just a new mum unfamiliar with formula! Its in date. Anyone elsenoticed this?

Formula smells horrible! Sort of acidic and plasticy? If course if you think it coukd have gone bad absolutely send dh out to get another bottle, and compare before giving to your baby, but yep after a year of it I can recreate that smell in my mind even though ds hasn't had it for three months

Thanks for your reply! Its incredible stuff! My oh says its probably all the nutrients pickled up together in the bottle but its so gross and pungent. I cant understand how my little one can stomach it :-/ i think I'll do as you suggest and go get some more. Perhaps little bottles so they are used in one go and no need to keep it for any length of time in the fridge.

We used aptamil but yes the ready to feed stuff always smelled yucky and looked yellowish.

I was housebound for most of last week and so yesterday used ready to feeds for DD for every feed since I was running out of powder

God I remember now why we moved from the RTFs she vomited after every feed and the nappies were horrendous

Never been so glad to get to morrisons before!

Formula smells disgusting. I've no idea why the baby will happily drink it down because I certainly wouldn't want to!

Agree, it smells awful. I dropped some on the floor at my mum's - the dog wouldn't even touch it Grin
