One year old hates his buggy and cries to get out after 5 minutes, this totally puts paid to doing most things. Do they grow out of this, it's exhausting. All other babies look quite happy in theirs so whys mine so unhappy, where am I going wrong?

is it making him uncomfortable - have you checked the straps aren't rubbing or something is poking into him? might be worth trying him in another friend's buggy to see how he is then you can work out if it's related to yours or not.

or maybe get one of those buggy toy accessories you can attach to keep him occupied?

My dd didn't like hers after around 18 months so we got her one of those trike things because she couldn't walk far enough. It wasn't ideal (a nightmare to steer, especially as I was also trying to walk with an older toddler in reins) but it meant she didn't spend all of our outings screaming and wailing. She was walking everywhere by the time she was 2.

Have you tried a sling? I carry my 10 month old dd in a sling daily. Hopefully there might be a sling library near you where you could try slings out. A back carry might be easier than front at a one year old's weight.
