Just starting cloth nappies - practical queries

I got a starter pack from Little Lamb for my 11 month old and it all makes a bit more sense now that I have actually seen them, and now I know which types I prefer (prefer the separate nappies and wraps, not pockets, and velcro rather than poppers). I would say it's been a success so far in that there has been no leakage onto clothes and no signs of discomfort, so I plan to at least continue using the ones I've got with disposables while they're being washed, and see how they go. I just had a few queries about the practicalities though:

  1. If the nappy is wet do you change the wrap too? I'm presuming not as the various guides I've seen suggest you need fewer wraps than nappies. If not, how often do you change the wrap?
  2. Baby did 3 poos yesterday instead of his normal 1 (how do they know when it will be particularly inconvenient...) - all three got onto the wrap and nappy as well as the liner - does this mean I'm doing something wrong in terms of positioning or is it just to be expected?
  3. How on earth do you do the poppers up around the back with the baby lying on his back? When I saw them in pictures I presumed the poppers went at the front!

I don't know about the 3rd point as we had different ones to yours but yes, when the nappy was only wet, we reused the outer wrap (unless it was actually soaked - sometimes the urine leaked through to the outside of the outer wrap) and just wiped it with a baby wipe.
Most of the time the poo stayed on the pad/liner and we just used to wrap the liner around the mess and flush (we used Boots' flushable liners that were bigger than the pad and folded underneath it - if any hung out of the outer wrap the nappy leaked). Occasionally, if it was a more runny poo, it would end up on the outer shell. We used to shake the lumpier bits into the loo and then swill it under the flush (powerful flush in our old house!) before chucking it to wash.

Our poppers definitely were at the front. Sounds like a design aimed to make life interesting for you. Guess you have to roll the baby on its side . . . .

Like pp I used to keep the wrap on unless the nappy had leaked badly - yy to a quick wipe with a babywipe. I had three wraps I think - one to wash, one drying, one ready for reuse, so would change the wrap as needed.

I found that as the baby grew/we went up a size in nappies/wraps then there would be an occasional leak, but that happens with disposables too. No nappy was ever completely bomb proof! We used a muslin square as extra around the nappy/inside the wrap when going through particularly leaky patches.

HTH.

We use little lamb pocket nappies and the poppers are definitely at the front!

There is a really good YouTube video showing how to fit them. Unhelpfully I can't remember it offhand.

We uses wraps and cloth nappies for a bit and reused the wraps if they seemed reasonably clean but never for more than a day. With the pocket nappies we throw the whole lot in the washing and start again.

Oh and we found poos almost always encroached onto the wraps. The re use bit generally only works with wees.

We use separate nappies and wraps at nigh (all in ones during the day)
Before weaning her poop always got on the wrap - now it's more solid it doesn't.
I've ne EBF seen a nappy that poppers at the back! Which one is it? We had a trial kit with loads of different types, all did up at the front or side!

I had the two parter and they def do up at the front.
Change wraps when soiled, or after every 3 wet nappies ( I just rinsed under tap and left to dry, might have done that two or three times before doing a nappy wash anyway, then I chucked them in too.

Hmm, sounds like I need to check, maybe I'm just being incompetent and they are supposed to do up at the front - it would make more sense!

Thanks very much for the advice, I don't know anyone who has used cloth nappies so it's really helpful to hear what you have done.

We have used all three types of little lamb and they all do up at the front! Which ones are you trying to do up at the back?

I never really got the whole 'fewer wraps' thing. If the wrap has wee on it, surely it starts to smell after a while? And with a terry/bamboo inner the wrap will get wet. We only use this sort at night though, so others may be able to help. We use pockets in the day.
