Parenting guilt - turns out I sent DD to school with tonsillitis can you top that?

Looking for some reassurance from MNers: yesterday Dd (6) spent breakfast time whinging and complaining of non-descript ailments. Shoved some calpol into her and packed her off to school; she was in tears when I picked her up at 3 at which point I begrudgingly said (still not convinced) that she could skip tap class. After a sleepless night DH suggested we should taker her to the dr and it turns out she's got tonsillitis. How crap is my poorliness radar and how guilty do I now feel? Has anyone else done this (or worse...)?

My Mum told me to take 2 aspirin and go to bed 12 hours after my first asthma attack started. My Dad disagreed and 2 hours after that he took me to A&E. My SATs were down in the low 80s!

I sent mine to school with chickenpox, which not only makes me irresponsible towards her but towards her classmates. In my defense, her spots weren't visible once she had her school uniform on and she had neglected to mention that she was covered in spots

My Gran sent my Mum to school with appendicitis because she thought she was faking it.

I sent DS in 2 weeks before Christmas only to get a phoncall telling me he was poorly so collected and he was definitely not right and kept off for a few days. Sent him in the following Monday as he seemed fine and teacher told me at home time that he had a bad cough and he really didn't sound fit for school, I was mortified.

Went to the Dr's the next day and was told he had a bad dose of tonsilitus

DD has been ill for 2 weeks on and off this week and I put it down to a cold, DS got sent home again on Thursday and I think they may both have tonsilitus now.

Patiently awaiting the doctors on Monday for them as although they seem fine now both are husky and poor DD (22 months) has possibly had it lingering for weeks...

DS2 hurt his wrist on the Saturday. He was still moaning a bit on the Wednesday so got it checked. Greenstick fracture.

Pah, they can still go to nursery with tonsillitis, 'tis fine. I'm sure I've made mine soldier on with throat and ear infections many a time - it's so difficult to tell when they are putting it on at that age!

I took myself to GP aged 9 as DM didn't believe I was ill. I had tonsillitis and came home with antibiotics. GP called social services!

On the flip side though I do remember lying to my mum to pull a Sickie, I was a very warped teen (lots going on and I didn't respond well) and I told my mum I might be pregnant when I was 13 purely because I couldn't be arsed

My mum saw me come off a horse in here rear view morror and kept driving. I broke ribs. In her defence though, at that age I was just fuming and she would not have stopped me getting back on anyway.

I told my husband there was no point in wasting the nhs time and money. He still went to the dr and then called me from hospital to say the chest infection I called a cold was actually quite bad.

I forced dd to eat chicken, even though she was saying it was hurting her and making her cry, only to realise the same evening that she had a massive abscess on the gum...

They removed 4 teeth yesterday, so she wasn't faking it

I sent dh to bed for the day after diagnosing him with norovirus.

Turns out he had had a Stroke



He's okay btw.

I got cross with DS2 for being moany when we were out at the local shops 3 days after he had a nasty gash to the head on a school trip. Turns out he was warming up for a spectacular and scary bout of peri orbital cellulitis.

But at least we had milk for the cups of tea/coffee that saw us through the following nightmare week.

I sent my 7 yr old dd to school for the best part of 6 weeks not realising she had glandular fever In my defence, she was almost constantly trying to convince me she was ill to get out of school right from foundation age. She was ok and is now a fit and healthy 13 yr old who takes great delight in telling people the whole sorry tale

My mum sent me to school for three days before she realised I was still complaining of a painful arm, and it might actually be broken.

I sent DD1 to school in all the snow a couple of years ago, because the school was still open. I kept DD2 and DD3 at home and we went sledging and had a brilliant time.

Turns out I could have kept DD1 at home with me and it would have been fine. She has never forgiven me

Another broken arm in my defence the school didn't notice either. She never even cried or said it hurt.

I made DD ride her bike home after she'd fallen off it and broken her arm.(Obviously didn't realise she'd broken it at the time). She had to have it set under general anaesthetic and then stay the night in hospital. After the op, the hospital said there was time to nip home and collect pyjamas etc before she woke up, so I left. She woke up. And I wasn't there. Nearly 20 years later I still almost can't bear to think about it all!

My then 5 year old dd walked round with a fractured wrist for 2 weeks(!) without me realising. In my defence, it wasn't swollen and she could move her fingers fine and she only complained about it every now and again. I thought it was just sprained and we only took her to hospital as she fell and landed on it 2 weeks after the initial injury and the blood curdling scream she emitted made us get it checked out. The X-ray showed she had a fracture that was a couple of weeks old and had started to heal. I felt so guilty!!

I have two examples

Ds2 fell off a trampoline and hurt his arm. He was upset for a while and had to lie down but perked up after a bit. The next day he was holding his arm in a strange way and my mum suggested I took him to the minor injuries unit, where he was x-rayed and it turned out he had a fracture.

Ds3 was quiet and felt a bit warm when he was 2 weeks old. The next day he vomited and my friend made me take him to the doctor, who looked at him and sent him straight to a&e. He had viral meningitis! 2 nights in hospital and lots of IV drugs sorted him out.

Sent DD1 to school with chickenpox (unintentionally - saw the first spot the previous night but thought it was an insect bite, she got herself dressed in the morning so I didn't notice the new ones).

Also sent her to school with tonsillitis and strep throat.

And delayed bringing her back to the doctor when she had a reaction to the antibiotic she had for the tonsillitis. (Thought it was possibly scarlet fever - which has the same treatment as she was already on).

In my defence: DD1 is a spectacular drama queen - we get wails and screams for a slightly bumped knee. But when she's actually sick she barely complains, until she is really really bad.

I told teenage DD to cheer up and stop fussing over a bit of period pains on a long coach journey. The next day she was rushed in for appendicitis!

I also sent her to school with a fractured arm. But she hadn't mentioned it at all that morning!

At least you didn't inflict the illness on her. I had to collect DS from school after he had thrown up all over his teacher and most of the IT Suite. Got him home and discovered that somebody had put a yoghurt in his packed lunch that was ten days past its use-by date. Hadn't they, DH?

I also had a broken arm for the best part of a week! My mum just said it was a bit bruised and gave it a vigorous rubbing. I have forgiven her. Don't worry dc will forgive you too
