Encouraging individualism

Hello fellow Mumsnetters. I have a question for those of you that have kids that are a bit different. Do you encourage there individualism and let them carry on being them or do you try to make them more conventional or normal. My son is different to other boys his age and I love his quirks and individualism but DH is worried that he will be bullied if we don't change him?? He is only 6 and very well liked for who he is by kids his age but older children do make fun of him. My dh is really stressing about it. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks x
