8YO - time for crop tops?

Slightly inspired by an AIBU thread I've just read, DD is about to turn 8. She has never outright asked about having crop tops but she has casually mentioned a few girls at school having them, particularly one she looks up to (who is a little too grown up for her age IMO)

I have been thinking and it occured to me I could get her a pack of the little short vest type ones as part of her birthday present ? I know she'd love them, she was clearly gauging my reaction last year when talking about these girls that had them - at the time I didn't think and just said they probably just wanted to feel more grown up as there was no need for them yet... but now I'm thinking (after reading that thread) if girls are wearing them - and I guess there will be more this year now they are in juniors, and I do know they still get changed with the boys... it might be an idea for me to get some, and she'd definitely feel more grown up with them

What do you think? Is 8 too young still, or do I go with my flash of inspiration?

My DD started wearing them at 9. She had always worn vests as she feels the cold, and I think some of the others were laughing at her. we swapped to the type that are literally short vests and she is much happier. I can't see the problem with them - I was forced to wear boys vests until I was in senior school until I needed bras. It was so embarrassing! I would far rather my DD was comfortable - both in terms of her peers and temperature-wise, than have to go through that.

Go for it.

It's a crop top not a wonder bra.

If it makes them. feel better because they fit in or it helps them.feel a bit more secure about their bodies then where's the harm.

My 8 yo must be unusual, she's never mentioned them! But if she wanted them, I'd probably go with it.

Mine is also the only one in her class with (relatively) short hair and who wears trousers into school most days, so conformity isn't necessarily her thing.

I was thinking of getting my dd a pack this summer, she's 7 but doesn't like vests especially when it's warm but will need something to protect her modesty during Pe change times...

Thanks all, DD wears full length vests normally and I know a lot of the girls don't either wear nothing or these ones wearing crop tops so maybe that is making it stand out to her... (the vests were her choice mind)

I think I will get them, it will be a nice little surprise for her - and like people say, its not like it can cause any harm!

Contraryish - my DD actually sounds like yours - she has a chin length bob, and wears trousers at least half the time for school!

I recommend the asda ones or primark. ones with more of a sports top style. The straps don't fall down on those.

Why does a 7yr old have to protect her modesty? Genuine question.

They don't.

However using a child and disregarding their feelings or comfort to prove a point is just cruel and more damaging than a crop top Imo.

Mario's yoshi mentioned it upthread... Wasn't a general musing.

DD started wearing them aged nine, for two reasons: her nipples started becoming tender, and the boy whose peg was next to hers was commenting on the shape of her nipples, which made her feel self-conscious.

My 8 yr old wears them too, she looks daft in them as she is nowhere near developing anything. But, she was very conscious of other, more developed girls wearing them, and she wanted to fit in, so she has them.

I offered to buy my dd (nearly 9yo) some crop top type vests and she said 'no thanks I like my current (standard) vests thanks all the same' Grin comfort over style is very much my dds priority though.

My DD has a couple of nice ones from Tesco. She's 8 but has had them since she was 7. She doesn't wear them often, just when she feels like it.

Unidentifieditem in the case of my DD, she has scars on her chest from an op she had when she was little. I want her to be able to have the option of covering them up if she wants to, especially during PE changing time.
