Dangers of Blinds with cords to young children

My daughter Sophia died on the 27th June 2013, I had left her downstairs for 4 minutes whilst I went to fetch her clothes and use the toilet. When I came back is found my daughter hanging and lifeless. She had strangled on the cord of our blind. We never used the blind in the lounge and it had gone unnoticed, it was there when we moved in. The cord was hidden by the curtains, if I had known it was there my little girl would still be here. Ever since that day I have been trying to campaign for blind safety and the hope that one day these blinds will be banned. All I want to do is warn others of the dangers, I have posted links to my e-petition and Facebook page. Nothing will bring my beautiful Sophia back and this is all I can do for her now, I love you baby girl. Thank you everyone xxx

I'm so sorry for your loss xx

I'm kind of in the blinds business and there's new legislation effective as of 31st March which addresses this very issue? (I don't have it to hand,so please forgive my bad paraphrasing) basically any corded blinds should now be fitted with a breakaway system, so that if any pressure or weight is exerted on it, the cord will give way long before any harm can be done to a child.
I hope this brings you some comfort

As a fellow bereaved parent, I am very, very sorry for your loss.

I'm bumping this.

PLEASE sign and share this.

My friend lost her daughter, age 2, in 2008 when she, too, strangled on a cord blind.

She campaigns tirelessly for a ban, and yet, 6 years on, children are still dying.

I'm so, so sorry about your daughter, Sophia. Thank you for posting.
The last blinds we bought automatically came with child safety devices. I hope this is now standard? We will be checking everything in the house once DS is mobile.

So sorry to hear about your beautiful daughter.I have just gone to check our blinds and we have the breakaway parts. I wonder if I should also add the bits that fasten the cords to the wall.
