Hi,
Dd is constipated, she's been weaning for 3 weeks, some mush some finger food. Has happily eating everything. She's BF and still feeding lots.
Went to gp today who px movicol but once started they recommend staying on it for 3 months. II'd rather avoid this so want give it another day or so And see if I can get a goodpoo .

What are your poo inducing food recommendations please ??

Anything like apricots, prunes, pear, soft fruit etc and offer water with food as much as possible. My ds would happily eat the soft ready to eat dried prunes which worked well.

Citrus always got things moving for my lot - a coupe of pieces of orange (skin removed) or watered down juice.

And I would make sure to avoid bananas and rice as both bunged them up.

A lot of nappies, wipes and clean vests. Because when you DO eventually shift it, it will be poomageddon.

Fresh orange diluted half and half with water usually sorts out most blockages in weaning babies.

DD suffered with it during the early stages of weaning and was in a lot of pain. GP advised prunes, prunes and more prunes. Any fruit with a 'p', as pears and plums also good, but prunes will do it. Also lots of water. Try warm baths, cycling legs and if they attempt a bowel movement encourage them to get it out by pushing legs back etc. Avoid BRAT; bananas, rice, apples, toast. They will make it worse. That's what to feed them after diarrhoea. It's hard, I know, my DD would scream in pain. It took a day or two of prunes at every meal and then the floodgates opened. Be ready for that. Also, I know you said you are breast feeding, but if anyone has the same issue and is on formula, I was also told to switch to a low iron one, as the high iron levels can contribute.

Red Berrys and sweetcorn always got my baby's moving.

I've had this at 7 months and 8 months with my little boy (didn't go to docs but will if happens again as he was in so much pain Sad

We gave him orange segments to chew on, lots of pear (was advised by midwife that pear is good for constipation/hard poos as it draws water back into the bowels so helps loosen things up) orange juice diluted in water, and I also used a teaspoon of brown sugar dissolved in 2 tbsp of boiled water (wait for it to cool).

Not sure which of them worked, but the first time I think I might have overdone it as we had green frothy nappies for 6 days afterwards.... (once all the hard poo came out). Second time, I cut back on the orange segments and managed to avoid that.

No idea why he's getting constipated, almost half of every meal is juicy fruits (e.g. not bananas)

Here's hoping your little boy makes a movement soon.

I was told that a little constipation in the early days of weaning is very common as it is just their little systems trying to cope with solid food. DD is now 9 months and although we've had a few episodes of constipation again, it has never been as bad as that first time, and has always been easier to shift. I think their bodies just get better at processing the food. That and I have an emergency jar of prunes on standby!

This happened with my DD (she's 8 months now). I mixed prune and orange juice together and tried to get her to BF more and that did the trick.
