2 day old baby hasn't pooped since birth, should I be worried?

My daughter was born on Tuesday. At the moment of birth she did a huge meconium poo and I didn't think to ask if this counted as her first stool or not, doesn't seem to be in her notes...?

Since then we've been getting plenty of wet nappies, my milk came in this morning and everything's fine and she's feeding lots, except she hasn't pooed. Should she have by now? I'm getting really worried. DS had pooped his way through several babygros by this point!

I plan to call the midwife for advice tomorrow morning if nothing by then but thought I'd ask here as well. She's passing a lot of wind... Could she be constipated?

Having passed one stool (yes it counts), I'm inclined not to worry too much overnight unless she seems uncomfortable with it/is vomiting.

Ds1 had this. He wasn't feeding effectively, even though he was hanging on the breast lots.

Is she jaundiced at all?

I would have someone come and check on her.

She should be pooing several times by now. I would contact the midwife first thing tomorrow.

i think lack of poo in a new baby is unusual. i would get her weighed to see what she's taking in.

DD2 went 5 days with no poo, after initially passing meconium. The HCPs did think this was highly unusual in an EBF newborn, and a cause for concern in its own right. DD2 was initially admitted for monitoring, but luckily tests were clear, and a glycerine suppository was instantly effective in getting things moving properly, so we ended up coming out of hospital the same evening.

It's fine. My friends baby took a week to do his first and it was fine. Two days is nothing. Really. Relax.
Congratulations btw. Smile

i would definitely speak to the midwife in the morning. am sure all is fine, but best to be on the safe side. it's unusual for a baby not to go more frequently than that

No jaundice was mentioned. She's been sick twice whilst burping, tiny amounts and it was white and grainy which made me think she's getting enough milk to be able to start digesting it... Which makes the lack of poo more confusing.

She doesn't seem uncomfortable Confused

Maybe worth putting a little olive oil on her bottom and massaging it - I know the things we do for our kids but this worked for my DS my Mum recommend it to me.

It should definitely be checked out as it can indicate feeding problems. Baby will probably do a huge poo just as you rock up at the midwife's :)

My dd was exactly the same. A massive meconium poo on the way out, then nothing for a couple of days. I would still mention it to midwife but hopefully nothing to worry about.

Thanks. I'll definitely call if no sign, good to hear that this can be normal!

As noble says get her checked out and expect a massive poo just before she gets seen.

According to kellymom she should have had a poo a say by now.

Has she been checked for tongue tie?

She blessed me with a poonami to rival all poonamis just now.

Obviously the public display of worry put the pressure on her and she felt she had to deliver Grin

great news. although I'm glad it wasn't me clearing it up.
I have fond memories of healthcare assistants pathetically wafting blue cleaning paper around as dd2 unleashed a five day backlog after the suppositories worked.

hahaha isn't it always the way?

At 5 days my DS had only done 1 poo just after birth and then nothing for 4 days, I took him to the doctor who prescribed colief as it has a laxative in it, got him home and before I could even add it to the bottle he did a poo that probably weighed as much as he did.... He still goes for a day or 2 without pooing now, he is 5 weeks, and I can see him struggling, but colief usually sorts it out.

my dd regularly went a week (sometimes 2) without pooing. its not that unusual! worth getting dc checked out but really dont panic too much.
