HELP Colicky baby :(

DS is nearly 3 weeks old and cries all night long, starting from about 1am until about 5am. We've just started using infacol and really hope that helps. Both of us have had to leave the room and have a little cry, I'm worried that it's going to affect my partner more as he has work in the week and needs the sleep. What did you use to help with colic/inconsolable baby?

Been there and done that, and can totally sympathise. Keep going with the infacol as it takes a few days to build up in their system. I would also recommend taking him to an osteopath, definitely helped my DS. Worth the money in my opinion. Other than that all I can say is that it won't last forever, bloody feels like it at the time I know. Have you tried white noise to distract him? Get it on YouTube on your phone, that used to quieten DS. Good luck!

Oh and Ewan the dream sheep!! Life saver at times.

OH tried white noise last night, don't think it did much but will definitely keep trying. Is it bad that I'm jealous of other people who say their baby's colic starts at 7pm and finishes at 10pm?! I haven't had a night's sleep in over a month, I was in hospital for a week before he was born, being induced, and couldn't get a solid night's sleep there. So feel I am really struggling!

My DD had colic between 4-8pm from three weeks old. At 5 weeks old I changed her milk to aptamil comfort. Within 2 days she was completely settled. my doctor was great, put it on prescription for her. I found the rocking swing helped little one to get comfy as well as laying her on her tummy across my knees and bouncing her gently up and down. patting/rubbing her back at the same time.

It's so, so hard and drives you round the bend. I feel for you. DS was colicky between 5-10pm, which was bad enough. Are you bottle or breastfeeding? I BF and found cutting dairy out of my diet helped. We also gave one bottle at night and used Aptamil comfort. There's so many factors that can contribute to colicky baby. I must have tried and self-diagnosed everything going. We borrowed a baby swing when he was a bit bigger as our backs were done in from rocking/jiggling him, wish I had got hold of one sooner. Is there anyone that come over in the day and take over for a few hours so you can go back to bed? My Mum and MIL got a few teary calls early in the morning asking if they could come round, and luckily for me they did, but appreciate not everyone has that help available.

You could try

Gripe water
Colief
Cutting out/reducing dairy in your diet if you are bf
Baby massage
A warm bath (yes, even at that time of night)

I'm combination feeding, expressing and feeding from a bottle though as he was in a billibed for jaundice for the first 4 days so wasn't able to get him to latch on, and all further attempts have resulted in both of us getting super stressed. We're using Aptamil too as I've heard nothing but good things, and it's been used since day one. I could try cutting out dairy, OH is lactose intolerant so it should be relatively easy.

My mum is great and is constantly offering to come round, she came round yesterday and helped me get on top of the washing and the bomb-site of a kitchen which was a massive relief for me.

Big thank you to you all for just talking to me about this, it's so nice to speak to people who have experienced it too.

My DD was colicky from about 2 weeks old and I remember how awful it was so I really feel for you. Hmm

Things that helped us were changing to comfort milk, white noise, co-sleeping (as she seemed to settle better in our bed rather than in her Moses/cot/pram), finding a dummy that she liked (Avent), infacol and gripe water.

She did eventually just grow out of it, although I know that's not helpful to you when you're in the thick of it. Really hope that you see some improvement soon Thanks

I don't know if I could trust myself co-sleeping, I don't think I'd be able to fully relax :( We'll be trying the white noise again tonight, and keep up with the infacol. He's got a dummy as he was a thumb sucker even when still inside me! And he started sucking fabrics etc and I didn't want him choking on fibres, so a dummy was quickly implemented.

I feel your pain! My DD2 is 5 weeks today & colicky night & day. She does settle during random periods. She is so full of air I'm surprised she hasn't floated away!
I'm breastfeeding & I'm trying everything to stop her gulping air down. I'm using infacol too but doesn't seem to be doing much.
It's so hard when your in the throws if it. I've got the fear that it won't ever get better & she will have this problem forever.
I found walking up & down with my IPod in listening to some upbeat music helped me deal with the non stop crying. It's the walking that's so difficult when your dead on your feet.

I hope things get better for you soon but be rest assured your not alone in dealing with this. X

Just to offer a different opinion, I tried comfort milk for my DS but it made him poo too much as there's so much fibre in it. Turns out his main reason for wind is how furiously he sucks on his bottle so the comfort milk didn't help as that's mainly for stomach cramps and constipation etc. I use infacol which helps, but now he's over a month old I also use gripe water half way through or at the end if a feed if he's struggling to get his wind up. It has made a world of difference. Warm baths are also soothing.

I'm afraid trial and error is the best way to find out what works for your LO but you'll get there and it doesn't last forever. You have my sympathies though, it is really, really hard. My DS still has a bad turn every morning at 5:30am but now we've found ways to manage it they are much shorter.

HTH

Not sure if it's colic or reflux, what's the difference? Also, hadn't pooped properly all day and just had a very liquid poop, mw and hv coming tomorrow so will mention that to them both.

does he burp after feeds? do you think it is wind trapped in the upper body so he needs to burp or wind trapped in his gut so he needs to fart? if he needs to burp then you'll need to find the best burping method and tilt his mattress a bit. If it's wind in his intestines then regular tummy massages will help.

gripe water is great for burping but a bugger to administer.

am typing on phone so can't see if you use bottles but if he is working hard on the teat a faster flow might help him stop taking in more air. might be a good idea to get your latch checked and for tongue tie.

I know it's nerve wracking co-sleeping but he might just want the comfort of his mummy. can your partner sleep on the sofa so you can have the whole bed to yourself?

it is really hard but it will pass.

In addition to all the other comments we also gave da a cherry dummy which is meant to hit an acccupressure point on the roof of the mouth that relieves colic. Health visitor told us this and they did seem to help as well as just generally soothe him. Ds had colic from 2 weeks old till 16 weeks from 3pm to 11pm. Was awful but keeping him upright as much as possible in the day helped and colief drops which I managed to get on prescription worked miracles.

Probably won't make you feel better but I can honestly say I tried everything in the book for colic, spent a fortune and was disappointed after getting my hopes up that something was going to work.

It was the worse time of my life thought it would never end but in all honesty the only thing that worked in the end was time. Things calmed down around 4 months and by that point I'd stopped stressing about accepted that this was just how things were going to be and just got on with it and before I knew it we'd have a few nights peace and soon enough they turned into weeks/months.

Be kind to yourself and your partner, support each other and when one of you snaps,as you will many times, don't judge and take over for 5.

Hth wish someone had said same to me would of saved myself a lot of money and stress.

He normally burps a couple of times after feeds, we've started burping him for a lot longer now. We're using Dr Brown bottles, only started using them exclusively yesterday so fingers crossed they help now.

Hang in there. This will pass. DS had the most awful colic for the first 3 months of his life. He was sleeping through the night by 5.5 months and has done err since. Don'tean to sound smug: just offering a ray of hope that babies can go from being colicky screaming nightmare sleepers to 11-hours-per-night dreams in the space of a few months.

He was so good before the colic started as well, everyone kept saying how well rested we both were! Same thing happened with my pregnancy, was so easy in the beginning, no morning sickness or anything, then as soon as I got to 28 weeks the problems kicked in!!

So far swaddling, dummy, and infacol seem to be doing the job. Fingers crossed this stays all night.

I'll give colief a go if he gets bad again tonight. Don't want to get my hopes up in case last night was just cos he was exhausted and that's why he slept.
