Hi everyone,

My partner and I disagree on a certain issue. I have a 3 month old son, I always put Vaseline around his bum (not in his hole) and use sudo cream for preventing nappy rash. My little one always struggles to break wind and cries when he does. He is on aptimal comfort as he suffered from constipation.

My partner says he thinks he struggles to fart because of the Vaseline - could this be true?? I'm a first time mum and any advice or help would be appreciated xx

Hey, first time mum here too :) I can't see how vaseline would stop him from farting (i may be wrong!) but personally i wouldn't use it on his bottom anyway, just stick with the sudocream. Have you tried gently bending his legs/any type of baby massage? This might help with the build up of gas x

Ah, I was going to recommend a gentle tummy massage too, in clockwise circles around his tummy.

It's not the vaseline. Hope he feels better soon!

Unless he actually has nappy rash I'm not sure why you're using either, however, I very much doubt it is having any impact on his ability to breack wind. I'd try cycling his legs and rubbing his tummy.

No. Try giving an ounce of water. I did this with my girl and she was fine. Otherwise pureed apple/pears

I second/third/fourth the tummy massage and leg cycling thing. Warm baths always seemed to help my ds's go.

Don't need to give him puréed anything at this age.

Hope he's better soon.

Could always rub it on dh bum and see if he can't fart anymore?

(Go on. See if he actually says yes. Sounds idiot enough to try! Does he really think Vas would stop baby farting?!?!)

They do not need any cream or Vaseline unless there is a nappy rash or sore bum. If none of these I would not be using anything.

I've always used a thin layer of sudocrem on a night time for my two and they never had nappy rash. Doesn't stop them pumping! I've never heard of Vaseline on bums though. A segment of orange juice squeezed into cooled boiled water was recommended to me by my hv when little babies are constipated and it worked a treat

Vaseline is not going to interfere with his farts, poor little guy!

Tummy time might help with the farts, though :).

Doubt the vaseline etc is doing anything - I wouldn't bother with it. My babies struggled to fart for months, until they could crawl. Massaging tummy, baths and sitting them up after feeds all helped, but mostly just getting older.
