How do I clean DS's toys ??

Hi all,

Hoping to get some advice on how I go about cleaning DS's toys. Most of them have a 'wipe clean' instruction on them, but I just think they need to be cleaned a bit more than that..

  1. Can I put all soft toys in the washing machine on a delicate cycle? I should use non-bio detergent right?
  2. What about the beany toys which come with mirrors and teethers? Surely they cannot go into the washing machine?
  3. If I did have to wipe clean some of his toys, is there a special wipes brand that I should be using? (tempted to use dettol wipes, but not sure if they will be good for DS)
  4. What about plastic toys?
  5. And finally, how to clean his bath toys... specially the squigy ones which fill up with water...

DS has eczema, so I'm not too keep on using anything harsh to clean his toys...

    Thanks all ! :)

Easy one first, bath toys use milton. Gets them nice and clean and any gunk out of the inside.

The rest of the toys, I rarely clean toys at all. My DC haven't died yet. A quick wipe with a detool wipe should surfice if you are that worred about it.

I never wash toys as a rule Blush but once a month or so I fill the bath with Milton and give the bath toys a soak - kills 2 birds with one stone as the bath gets a clean too! Dd has eczema too and this has always been fine although I do give it a good rinse. Everything else gets a quick baby wipe if it's been dropped in the mud!

Soft toys can go in the washing machine. My 10 month has 4 he loves and sucks to death so I have to wash them all twice a week. I put them in a pillowcase and knot it to keep them in then wash on the hand wash setting with fairy washing powder and softener.
Bath toys can go in the dishwasher, but apparently should be thrown out after 6 months of use.
Plastic hard toys I use flash wipes on followed by a baby wipe.

I put all soft toys in the washing machine . Disclaimer- I still haven't forgotten my mum murdering my bear when I was little by doing this so I wouldn't put a much loved one in.

Bath toys I chuck every now and again and tbh tend I stick to cups / sieves / little figures etc.

Plastic toys I used Milton spray. I say used because I used to clean ds's toys every night when he was a baby. I do not clean them at all that often now.

I wash all the soft toys at 30 and dry on the radiator. They are all still in one piece Grin
Bath toys need to be chucked now and then if you can't get the black mould out. The rest I put in the dishwasher now and then.

Anything that can go in the washing machine does. Would personally put mirrored beanies in pillow case and chuck them in the machine too. Everything else that's not electronic goes in the bath with squidge of washing-up liquid here. Electronic toys get wiped. Tend to do those toys that have had a lot of use every six months or so. Am usually disgusted by the state of the bath water. Have only ever done all toys once. (Eldest 9 yo!) Toys are out every day / still in constant use. Can't wait to get to the stage where I can start chucking.

All soft toys and playmats go in the the washing machine here, even the ones with teethers etc on.

My DCs (4 and 2.6) love washing their plastic toys - I fill the bath or paddling pool with bubbles, give them a flannel or a muslin and they spend a very happy afternoon scrubbing all the animals, megablocks, plastic food, tea set, etc. great fun.

Having a 'car wash' for all the vehicles is brilliant too, they scrub their scooters with paint brushes.

As a childminder I had to wash all toys.
Anything cloth went in the washing machine (as long as no batteries)
Anything plastic went in the dishwasher.
But then I put everythingbthroughbthe dishwasher to sterilise it :)

Milton is sterilising solution. You can get it from the baby aisle in supermarkets or Boots etc.

You wash Lego??? Blimey. 2 years in I've not washed anything really. DD's Smurf doll went into the wash once after it went puddle-hopping but really that's about it.

Um.

Normal soap and hot water is what I do, washing up liquid is fine, or I have a bar soap I use to scrub clothes. Rinse very thoroughly and air dry. Think the dishwasher is a great idea, I'd do it if I had one! Dettol wipes noooooo Shock

Miaow, I used to wash plastic stuff in my classroom too, including mutilink.
I'd stick it all in a container with bio washing liquid overnight and then rinse it completely clean several times to ensure there was no residue of any sort.
Disclaimer: Do not do this with plastic rulers. It may well result in 30cm lengths with no visible markings. Blush

Worthwhile sticking washed soft toys with squeakers in the airing cupboard to dry.

How old is your DS? Smile
Because if he's at the crawling, eating bits off the carpet and licking the walls stage, then when they get visibly grubby or sticky.
