How do I wean away from swaddling?

LO who is 6mo goes to sleep swaddled in a shawl. He can now move out out of it and it comes over his head. I have tried a grobag but he wakes himself up with his arms being loose since he is used to them being wrapped up in his shawl. How do I wean him of the shawl. He also associates the shawl wit sleep time so put him in the grobag and hi eyes never close so I have been sitting the shawl ontop of the grobag until he falls asleep.

I had this same problem a few months back. I got a convertible wombie like THIS with arm holes that you could close up with poppers. For the first week I put DD in her sleeping bag and then into the wombie (a bit of a fiddle on, but ok); the next week I had her in the same arrangement but with her right arm out of the wombie; the next week her right arm in and her left arm out; then both arms out and then finally just in the sleeping bag with no wombie. It was a hassle but we got there relatively painlessly. We had tried going cold turkey and just going straight to unswaddled but she wouldn't have a bar of it.

Good luck!

We started off by using the Grobag for daytime naps, and once DD had gotten used to it we progressed to using it for night time. I think we had to stop using the swaddle blanket in the end because DD was managing to wrestle out of it and there seemed little point in it anymore.

The Wombie looks likes good idea too Smile, if I'd known about it I would have tried that too.

The woombie might do the trick though it does look like a straightjacket in the picture. Suppose swaddling does too.

Yeah, they do look a bit like straight jackets! Grin In the flesh, though, they're not like that. They're made of a stretchy material and my LO could move her arms around a lot more than when she was swaddled, but couldn't bash herself in the face like she did when we tried her unswaddled at first. When she was both arms in she would often suck her fist through the material as well as moving her arms around a fair bit.

I weaned my 5 mo off swaddling by using a Peke Moe (have a google!). He took to it immediately, and from there we went to grobags. Would recommend.
