We have all (DH, me and 9mo DD) had a really bad cold and are left with a horrible cough. I'm going to get me some cough medicine - the one that thins and loosens phlegm - I assume there's nothing I can give DD? Poor thing is really struggling with it...

I got told that not only was there nothing but glycerin stuff that I could give mine, but as I was breastfeeding there was nothing I could take either...... she even suggested that Olbas Oil for my nose was risky!

He didn't even like the glycerin stuff - spat, choked, and shot looks at me as if I'd tried to poison him....

If an under 1 is coughing badly I'd take her to the doctor- it could be a chest infection. I think it's been pretty much proven that cough mixtures don't actually do anything- but I'm sure someone who knows more will come along soon. Have you tried taking her into a steamy bathroom? That sometimes helps. Hope she feels better soon.

if your doctor agrees you could give her Guaifenesin. THe dosage is by weight here www.drugs.com/dosage/guaifenesin.html. It is the active ingredient in many expectorant cough syrups and works by loosening the phelm us (making it more watery) and thus easier to bring up. it is available over the counter in most instances though i wouldnt tell the pharmacy assistant that you are using it on a child under 6. THe relabelling of cough medicines in the uk for 6 years and over means that your average boots assistant will just refuse to sell it to you.

DD had a terrible cough last year and it really helped.
