Flying with an 11 month old!

Hi all,

We're going on our first family holiday abroard tomorrow. We're flying over to France.

Just wondered if anyone had any top tips for us?! I have heard about getting baby to drink on take off and landing to help with ears popping.

We land late afternoon and will get to the house at her tea time so I need to take food with us for her. She had a pouch of food yesterday to see if she liked it as I thought it would be easier to transport. She wasn't over the moon about it and I have left it too late to try her on different flavours etc to see if she likes some. So to take a little pot of her food where do we put it? In our hand luggage or in the suitcase? We'll take it frozen, though by the time we get on the plane it will have defrosted! We should have no problem getting to the house before she needs food but should I take her tea in hand luggage in case of delays?!

I can take her a drink and snacks on in hand luggage and I'll take a bottle and a carton in case of emergency!

Any tips appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

If she is used to eating a certain type of food, do take it frozen and it will have defrosted when you arrive.
Depending on volume, I think you'll have a hard time getting it through departures.
If it is over a certain amount, you will have to throw it away. Which airport are you going from? Some have reasonable places to eat, others don't. Even if your only option is MacD's or KFC, you may have to bite the bullet.

Solids are not restricted and neither is powdered formula. Only liquids. Liquid formula is restricted to the amount necessary for the flight. So short hop, probably one bottles worth.

My tiddler's flown a fair bit (yesterday too) and we've yet to have a problem - explosive poo in departure lounge aside! Shock

We've had no problems taking milk or food through for the baby in hand luggage - although you might be asked to eat/drink a little bit to prove it's not liquid nitrogen.

Each and every time he gets on the plane he falls asleep as it's taxi-ing to the runway and doesn't wake up until it's landed. :)

As far as food on the go - as it's such an "exciting" day anyway we just give him a bit of whatever's going to keep him amused - e.g., yesterday he had great fun with a croissant - letting him feed himself is much more fun for him and easier for us!

Thanks all!

So I can just put her dinner in the hand luggage?!

Alpine I agree about her sharing our 'food on the go' but we won't be having any food! We're travelling mid afternoon and will be at the house teatime, it's a friends house so there'll be no food there! Plan is for us to get there and I'll feed the baby while the others go shopping, therefore we have to take one meal with us!

Can we take the tub of powdered formula in hand luggage or does it have to go into the main suitcase? Just thinking of weight restrictions!!

Thanks again

Ds was 11 months when we flew on a plane but he was bf so after we took off I fed him and he slept the whole 1.5 hour flight. Did this on the way home too!

Sorry not helpful if you don't bf but I'd suggest finger foods and small toys for tour hand luggage too.

Good advice re food/ drink but don't forget how long you'll be without ycour luggage (checkin/ baggage reclaim etc)

My dc1 ended up on a short flight in just nappy and cardi (explosive poo x 3) - I'd been a bit naive about how many changes I'd need for a 1 hour flight...
