Should I be worried?? Ie: Sons back/spine, something else??

From the day he was born he has never liked being on his back. He screamed for 3 day's whenever I put him down to sleep and just wouldn't go to sleep.

On the 3rd day, the MW came and I explained so she told me to put him down on his tummy. I did it there and then while the MW was there and my son fell straight to sleep and slept for 3 hours. The MW and I watched for a bit and it became quite clear that he could move his head from side to side without any problems so from then on he slept on his tummy.

As the day's/weeks went by, it was clear that he HATED being on his back. Every nappy change was a nightmare, dressing him too, it ended up with him in full on screaming mode trying to wriggle over.

He hated it so much that he made sure he would never have to be on his back (and this is where it's going to sound like I'm boasting but I'm really not, other things he has done quite late)

At 2 weeks old he could lift his head and shoulders off the ground when on his tummy, at 4 weeks his head, shoulders and tummy holding his weight with just his arms so he could look around, at 8 weeks old could roll from his back to his tummy (but still can't/won't go the other way) and would do so at every opportunity so couldn't even get him to get used to being on his back (also made bathtimes a nightmare as he would try to roll onto his tummy in the water so i literally had to grip onto him, wash and out asap) and at 12 weeks was pulling himself along the floor commando style. So as you can see, all related to being on his tummy and absolutely nothing wrong with him in any other aspect.

However he is now 11 months old and I'm starting to get worried that there might be something seriously wrong. It's getting worse. He proper kicks off, gets hysterical and sobs when I try to change his nappy or get him dressed. It takes ages because he fights against me so much trying to get back on his tummy. I tried getting him dressed the other way but because he was moving so fast I can never bloody catch him.

His HV said it was a stage that he'll grow out of but it's happened every single day since he was born. Can that really be just a stage?

What do you think? Is it time to push the doctor more to find out what's going on or am I making a big deal out of nothing and it really is just a stage?

Thank-you in advance for any replies.

(So glad I found this site, had/have loads of questions I need to ask)

It might not be his actual back. It could be his diaphragm and he might have reflux which makes it very comfortable to lie on his back. My neice hated being on her back- loathed carseats too and she turned out fine. What I would recommend is that you see a cranial osteopath. They can work on all parts of the body and DD has just finished after 3 sessions and its worked wonders. Some may come on here and say its rubbish, but it worked for us.

I was going to come on and say see a cranial osteopath too.
It could be that it's a personality thing, and he's just desperate to do stuff, but equally it could be something that is painful to lie on.
I think a CO could solve whatever it is, or at least tell you what the problem was.
(A CO diagnosed my mil with some back condition that dr's wouldn't even consider. A scan proved her right, so I do have a lot of faith in CO)

Thank-you for your replies.

I don't know if we have a cranial osteopath round here but I'll look into that.

He definitely seems uncomfortable on his back if not in pain. He did have reflux when he was tiny but with medication that seemed to sort him out and we stopped needin to give him the meds around 6ish months. Do you think he could still be suffering with it? He doesn't show all the usual symptoms of it that he did before apart from the reluctance to lie on his back.

Could it have been genuinely painful to be on his back when he was teeny, but since he slept on his front, it's just become ingrained in his mind that back=bad, obviously combined with the desire to get about.

Nihilisticbunny

It very well could be.

Ive found a cranial osteopath so will be phoning them tomorrow but if it is just psychological from the pain as a baby how would we get over that?

Apart from changing I suppose he doesnt need to be on his back anymore so he may just grow out of it?
