People were lovely, especially my hv. DD was an average 7lber at birth. By a couple of months she was off the charts. She had rolls on rolls. It was particularly refreshing to have a hv who didn't say she was overfed or any such nonsense.

She's 4 now and tall, really tall. And people assume she's much older than she is. She soon puts them right though.

Ah yes "well done". Feel a bit bad for parents of tiny babies with that one. I usuay reply that his daddy is very tall.

To be clear, the hv wasn't saying this in the hearing of other parents. Although she was brilliant, she'd wander through the clinic exclaiming "lovely hair he has", "oh what a fabulous outfit", "what a pretty little girl" etc. She was wonderful to everybody.

But to get to the size she did on bm alone (was over 25lbs before we started weaning), dd fed at least 2 hourly for the first 6 months, usually more. I was exhausted but determined and I think "well done" was the only response that wouldn't have resulted in me sobbing with desperation.

My DD (5 weeks) was 9lb 4oz and has lots of "bruiser" comments. Now I realise I'm totally biased but she's not even chubby she's just freakishly long!
People seem to comment on the weight rather than actually look at the baby. Also lots of people assuming she was EMCS due to her size - she was brow presentation and got stuck.

Yes, well done is lovely! DS2 (9wo) is heavier than my friend's six month old, so I am conscious of playing it down near her.

A friends had a baby heavier than the 99.6th centile, and her HV told her she needed to put him on a diet. At six months old!

A colleague had a ten pound plus baby and when it was announced in staff briefing, all the women collectively winced!

Is it wrong to not know what a centile is? I know its in that little red book I have down the back of the sofa. People do comment on DS3's 'strong legs' ie they are massive!

DS was 8lb 8oz at birth, which I know isn't massive, but we do tend to have small babies in our family- I weighed 7 and a half pounds at birth, and I'm still held up as an example of a 'big' baby by everyone in the family. I think everyone was expecting a right little chubber when they heard how much he weighed!

MIL calls DD 'armache' and 'pudding'. She also says 'oooh your fat bits have fat bits'
When people ask her birth weight they tend to wince. Especially as I'm not particularly big myself

DS was 5 weeks prem and 6lb 5oz, well over 10lb by his due date. The midwives/hv all commented that wasn't it a good thing he was prem

DD has always been in the 95th centile.

I had lots of "Ouch" comments, and "How Old???" but she's just very very tall, at 18 months she's already 90cm, and DP is really tall too. HV reckoned she could grow to be 6'4...

"But you're so tiny! How did that happen?" DS was 10lbs 9oz at birth, and everyone assumed (correctly) that it was an EMCS and (incorrectly) that I had diabetes while pg. He's still pretty big, but I guess there must be some big genes in the family...

Oh yes, your baby is big therefore you will never be able to bf. And they'll need weaning very early indeed. I did encounter that load of bollocks point of view more than once.

DS1 was 10lb 15oz (EMCS at 41 weeks) and DS2 was 10lb 12oz (elective CS at 39 weeks on medical advice.)

"Bruiser" - yeah, got that one a lot

It was V amusing watching people/midwives etc walk down the ward, glancing at all the cute little dots in their fishbowls then doing a double take as they took in DS1, practically squished against the sides as he was: "Aww.... aww... hello... oh, cute.... WHOA! BLIMEY!!"

The female surgeon who delivered DS1 was tiny - she had to get someone taller to lift him out, since her arms wouldn't stretch far enough. He just sort of kept coming

I had a distinctly average 7lb13 baby but my boss emailed my entire company the birth announcement saying she was 13lb 7 oz. Apparently there was a fair amount of wincing then too

.... and I didn't have gestational diabetes either. We worked out that DP must just make really big babies. He's got a son from a previous relationship (now 21) who was 4lb at 10 weeks prem, so chances are if he'd gone to term he'd have been a whopper too
