My baby smells like vinegar

Ok, this may sound totally weird but my 4 mo dd2 smells of vinegar. She had a bath last night but this morning I've noticed that her head has a vingary smell.

As a bit of background I called nhs direct at the weekend as she was getting really clammy and I was worried. They actually sent an ambulance out which was a bit of an over reaction really, the paramedics suggested she had an upset tummy (she had noisy bowels).

I am feeding her now and there is a very definite whiff of vinegar. Should I be worried??

Nice! Reminds me of nights sweats I get for the first few months post partum which smell of sour milk and v similar to baby poo.

My DS (15 weeks) has stinky vinegary feet. I wash them every day but they still pong. He also gets really smelly white crud in the creases behind his ears, and in his armpits. Babies are dirty little things really aren't they?!

I thought it was just my dairy-allergic ds1 (which we didn't know at the time) who smelled like a bottle of the chippy's best. My dc2 and 3 didn't smell of anything like that.
Fascinating threads.

hmm really interesting threads. DD1 was always vinegary and she was intolerant to all kinds of things. Her dirty nappies were VERY vinegary until I cut out gluten from my diet when she was EBF and it stopped immediately. The windiness clamminess you mention rings all kinds of bells with us. Both DDs have been refluxers and they both get very cold and clammy heads when going through a bad reflux phase or I forgot their meds. Does she arch and wriggle during/after feeds? sleep restlessly when flat?

How strange - my DS smelled of vinegar too when he was a baby (his older sister used to say he smelled like S&V crisps!)

I don't know if there's a connection but at 3 months he developed eczema and he has some allergies and asthma.

Hmmm hobnob, she does sometimes agitate at feeds & sleeps in a hammock so is never flat anyway. She has always been really windy, but the sweating is recent. She does also get cheesy armpits!

Keep a food diary and see if there's anything in particular that you eat that makes the agitation worse in the following days.

DD1 was dairy, soy & wheat

DD2 was dairy, soy, wheat, eggs, nuts

Tough at first if you do it, but makes you feel great once the cravings subside (not to mention a happier baby!). Don't cut out food groups without first speaking to a HV though. You will need a calcium supplement if you cut out dairy.

My DS is 2 and a half and I noticed the other day after I got him up after his nap, that he was very sweaty and smelled of vinegar. He has eczema and possible asthma (he has inhalers but too young to diagnose yet).

My mum said that my feet smelled of vinegar when I was little, though.

A friend's lo had this, a strong acidic smell that came specifically from her head. In that case it was because her lo had very bad silent reflux.

Just wondering if you ever found anything out on the vinegar smell with DD? My DD has exactly the same thing... noticed it a few times a few months ago but really noticing it again today, so thought I'd Google.
