Hedrin Once versus Hedrin overnight lotion

Is Hedrin Once any good? It claims you don't have to re-apply in 7 days time, unlike the other Hedrins... do we believe that?

Hmmm, I used Herdin Once 2 nights ago and TBH it was so difficult to wash out I resorted to using fairy liquid. It was such a hassle that next time we get nits I will stick to the "conditioner and nitty grutty comb" method and save myself £12 per bottle.

I used a combination of hedrin and nitty gritty comb / conditioner to get rid of DD's nits.

I don't think hedrin would've worked on it's own TBH. We only used it because it was free from the chemist (we have a care in the chemist scheme here) so it was worth a go. I wouldn't spend money on the stuff.

Combing is best but an utter pain in the arse, especially if you have children with long hair or several children to treat. I nearly lost the will to live with just the one infested child

Thats the gel one isn't it? I was told by someone who works at the Medical Entomology Centre (where they test headlice treatments) that the Hedrin gel is the only one where they had 100% success rates in the tests, much better than other products they test. Not only that, it worked better if you followed instructions and washed it out after 10 mins rather than left it in all night. They didn't say whether you had to reapply in 7 days or not though.

Like the CrackFox says the Hedrin Once is AWFUL to rinse off. Shampoo just doesn't lather up, it left an oily sort of residue in the bath and it took about 3 nights of washing with loads of shampoo for DD's hair to look normal again - looked like she had just been swimming or had hair gel in for a couple of days. I used it because of the faff of leaving the ordinary Hedrin in overnight then getting it washed out in the morning and the hair combed through with the nit comb before getting out to school in the morning. I always find the one you leave in overnight to be pretty good - if you suspect nits on a Friday night and can spend an hour or so on Sat morning doing the combing! It drowns them I think rather than 'poisoning' them so they don't get resistant. Feel like a bit of an expert on the nit thing after the term we've had at DD's school I did hear that putting flour on when washing out the Hedrin Once helps - at least I think I did, don't quote me on that

i use the nitty gritty comb - you have to keep at it but it works with no chemicals.

I've always used normal Hedrin but combed through with Nitty Gritty whilst applying - usually the 7-day followup found no bugs.

I'm paranoid though - these days I'm doing a weekly check with leave-in conditioner and Nitty Gritty, and on my hairdresser's advice I spray their hair with cheap hairspray int he morning (and it's tied back too).

So far no bugs for the last 15 months despite repeated outbreaks at school.

Thanks everyone! I've alays used Nitty Gritty in the past but once I discovered Hedrin lotion I found it took less combing. I will try the Once and see what I think. DingDong, that was great to know about the tests!

two friends have told me to try putting a few drops of tea tree oil in the shampoo/conditioner once you have got rid of the nits. Nits will avoid re-infesting tea tree'd hair I'm told. I have an organic leave in tea tree conditioning spray from wilkinsons for 2 pounds. Only just got it though so not sure how effective it is.

Both worked amazingly for me,the only thing that works to be frank.

I have 3 dc 7,7 and 6.All with long hair who re-infest each other without fail.The NittyGritty comb just doesn't do the job.Dp and I used to spend hours combing and yes it keeps the nos down and small but it never totally gets rid of it because there is so much hair.

I don't want to use the pesticides so turned to Hedrin-fan bloody tastic but you can't skimp on it.It needs to suffocate them. I get the huge bottle from Boots and do all 3 at once.

The cost is worth the man hours and constant reinfection.

Considering my girls are so small- they've had alot of lice (the price you pay for long thick hair X2). Trying the 8 hour solution was a NIGHTMARE as the girls went to bed kicking and screaming, I could understand, I wouldn't want to have that on my head in bed. The ONCE solution wasn't much better. In this case it was so gooey and sticky that it wouldn't spread and it just didn't take care of the problem. FullMarks did a pretty good job, hopefully for the last time :)

I have found using a hot hair strightener to zap the eggs and lice effective then just condition and comb them out..
If you want to be extra cautious then i have used the lotiins and hedrin 15minutr application after going through the hair with a straightener..
I continue to straighten the hair for a couple of days..
Of course if the hair is long enough to do this..i do have some thin small mens atraighteners my husband once used that woyld be useful on short hair..

I can recommend using a lice clinic - NitNot in Hemel Hempstead. Well worth the money.
