T.v decide to turn itself off constantly?
I am no where near any remote control, I'm the other side of the room to where the T.v is. My ds is in his cot sleeping, the dog is on our bed so I know its not us. No sooner I turn it on then it goes off again any ideas people?

I had no major problems up until yesterday. Nothing else is affected if it is power surges

It sounds like an electrical problem, DO NOT LEAVE IT ON STAND BY OVERNIGHT.

If it turns itself on in the middle of the night and then shorts, it could burn the house down.

maybe tv is on its way out, how old is it?

burstingbug · 12/08/2005 14:46

We turn it off by the button on the telly over night, not left on stand by. maybe i need to start switching it off at the mains overnight.

Not sure how old it is, need to check with dh, it was his grandpa's which was left to him, maybe 10 yrs old perhaps? its a big widescreen hitachi possibly a 30"ish screen, so it'd go with an almighty bang!!

We had a couple of tvs which would turn themselves off, It was a problem with on/off switch-loose connection I think, and old age, tried to get one repaired but wasnt worth spending money! I would advise not using it, this is what we were advised to do by tv man!

think we deffo need a new one its still turning itself off!! might get a friend to look at it.
If i'm lucky it stays on for several minutes, otherwise it doesn't stay on at all. didn't have this problem this morning though. How odd

Sounds exactly like our old tv!! Does it still have 'dot' on screen?

Wow - bb - are you sure you're not me? The exact same thing has been happening to our Hitachi TV too and it finally packed up last week while we were on hols and my sister was house-sitting. It started turning itself off and we were demented wondering who'd sat on the remote control each time before we realised it was nowhere near anyone! Rang a TV repair place (as I don't fancy forking out £500+ for a new one atm - we've had a run of bad luck re things packing up) and he thinks it's very likely to be simple to fix for around £50 including picking it up and bringing it back and a service. Worth it imo. At the moment my car is in having the exhaust replaced, the hoover has died and two weeks ago we had to replace the shower!! Let's hope your luck is better than mine and it's only your tele that's on the blink!

It's all happening at once with you Areo! I'm going to look into getting it fixed I think, altough saying that touch wood (now where'd I put my wood?) it's remained on for more than a few mins, but I missed most of the Wiggles!!

lol. Now we can't be having that can we! We have our old (reliable) portable set up in the lounge on a chair for now and it'll have to do, but not a child in sight! Ds1 and dd are across the road at their friends house and ds2 is asleep as he has been for two hours - am about to wake him up so I can have some peace later on this evening! Bless him - thoughtful of him to provide me with some mn time in between holiday washing!

my ds is on the floor playing with my trouser leg! Reasonably happy for the moment, but feel I may need to rescue him in a mo, he's just rolled off again, to lazy to crawl, just rolls and stretches to whatever or wherever!

Does it have a remote control with a timer on it ... with ours you can set the timer to turn the tv off after 30/60/120/180 mins.

Report
burstingbug · 12/08/2005 17:20

It does have a timer, but that is not on.

Well, the man's just been and taken it away to the TV hospital to return it to health. It will cost £74 and will be back in our living room tomorrow! (The other one I rang who would have charged £55 couldn't do it for two weeks, so I'm paying a bit more for this chap, but he was very nice and said it was a common problem. Something on the inside overheats and eventually dies, but can be easily replaced and will hopefully last several more years without any further problems. Better than paying for a new TV I guess, but it's been an expensive day in the Aero household - the car has had a new exhaust today too! Financial 'ouch'! The hoover will have to wait - will borrow my sister's!
