Rapists, and what to do with them

Firstly i want to apologise for 'going off on one' on that other thread. That thread was about a specific case and i made it personal. I shouldnt have done but i got wound up and angry.

Secondly, Its bought to my attention the way i feel about the justice system and punishments for rapists.

I believe that the punishment should fit the crime. On the other thread i was called 'unhinged' and many other things but like i said i was wound up.

But i stand by what i said and am just taking my opinions away from that thread cause that thread is on a specific case iykwim

this probably makes no sense but im struggling to understand why people dont agree that nothing less than torture and death is good enough for a rapist?

and cause you cant tell tone of voice in a post im just letting you know that im not typing out of anger, more just thinking allowed.

Here, here Happyhuggy - couldn't agree with you more .

Because I dont believe violence and torture fit into a civilised justice system dealing with people who are most probably victims themselves of dreadful crimes.

toture and death have no place in a civilised society.

Report
HappyHuggy · 05/07/2005 23:21

neither does rape but yet it exsists - why not punish them with toryure and death?

If someone raped my child, then yes, I'd want to torture them etc but I believe a civilised society does not allow it's victims to choose the punishment. That's what we have a justice system for.

Then noone is civilised.

just no, hh

there is a world of difference between one f*cked up individual and state sanctioned murder

a justice system that does what? feeds and clothes the perverted scum. it'd be cheaper and more effective to shoot them.

What about finding out after you've shot them that actually they were innocent?

SenoraPostrophe · 05/07/2005 23:25

ffs

Why not take those kids who are being abused now and shoot them before they reach the stage of being a possible rapist?

Report
HappyHuggy · 05/07/2005 23:26

its more fuc*ed up to let them carry on living and breathing than it is to kill them

and as far as innocent people go - its hard enough to get a conviction for rape as it is.

A. Because torture is not something a civilised legal system can countenance

B. Because the death penalty is the worst penalty there is, and rape, heinous though it is, is not the worst crime there is. Apologies to anyone who has been through it and feels strongly, but rape victims are not left dead, and murder victims are. There has to be some proportion in meting out penalties. Otherwise "you may as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb". If the penalty is the same for any crime as it is for murder, the criminal may as well do the murder as well.

The trouble is once you commit murder and torture then you are no better then them. How is that a civilised society?

Report
Caligula · 05/07/2005 23:30

And who is going to train the torturers? Will there be NVQ's for them, or will anyone who feels strongly simply be allowed to walk into a prison and torture someone?

Mmm, wonder what sort of people will want a job doing that.

HappyHuggy · 05/07/2005 23:32

I think the victim should have the pleasure of inflicting back some of the pain she has recieved.

I just dont understand how people can have compassion for the perverted scum. I cant see how people could argue against it purely on the basis of 'civelised society' surely a rapist has opted out of being part of that civilised society but commiting his crime?

Just read the thread again.

Are you really suggesting that vulnerable children of eight, nine, ten, should be taken out and shot because they've been sexually abused, rather than counselled and offered support?

Because if you are, I just can't see how it's possible to have a rational debate.

and yes i wouls do that job and still sleep soundlt at night - i would be doing a favour for society.

Do you not wonder what makes a person that way in the first place? Can you not consider that counselling, rehabiliation and incarceration have a place?

I would take no pleasure personally in torturing a human being and I've known some shit ones.

Huggy many victims would not want the right, they wouldn't want to be reduced to the level of their attacker, they wouldn't want to allow him (or on the odd occasion her) to destroy little sense of self and right they have left.
