Would you say a size 14 is far or thin?

I lost four and a half stone and went from a size 22 to a size 14 (I'm 5 foot 10) and felt quite happy and slim after that. But recently I've read/heard some comments which suggest that a size 14 is definitely not widely regarded as slim. One was Patrick Kielty mocking Abi Tittmus on Celebrity Love Island, the other was a comment by Liz Hurley about how large women shouldn't wear tight-fitting clothes, and in the Mirror they interviewed a woman who was a size 14 and felt that she was one of the women Liz Hurley was talking about.

What do you all think?

From a size 22 id say it was fantastic but for me (who is growing steadily into a 16) from a size 10 it feels fat. I have bulges I dont like, I suppose its how you feel within yourself, if my size 14 going on 16 wasnt so bubbly and flabby id feel fine

I think it is all relative. I was a 10 for years and then I put on weight to a point where I would love to be a 14 again - I think size 14 sounds beautiful when you are 5'10'!

If you are 4 ft 6 it's probabyl fat. If you are 5 ft 10 it's definitely slim.

FGS don't take Patrick Kielty or Abi Titmuss as a guide!!!

around 70% of the UK population are over size 16 so I wouldn't worry if I were you. Congratulations on losing the weight, you probably look fab.

That sounds great to me too. I am 5ft 9in and a size 14 and fairly slim (bit of a wobbly belly but hey ho) so if you are 5ft 10 and a size 14 I shouldn't be at all worried.

14 is probably the absolute right slim size for you at 5'10. i'm 6' and used to be a 14 before i had dd. i'm now an 18 and consider myself to be heavy BUT when I was a 14 I thought of myself as trim.

I think that Abi Titmuss is bigger than a 14 tbh as she's much curvier than I was at a size 14

i'm your height and also a size 14 - i'm quite happy with that tbh. i could do with a slimmer tummy, but could achieve that with toning exercises rather than weight loss.

is patrick kielty the tw*&nt who co-presented cli? if so, i wouldn't pay any attention to anything that smug, gurning loser said. who cares what liz hurley thinks?

It's slimmer than the national average isn't it? I would have thought it's just about right by most people's standards, and fantastic from a size 22, congratulations!
Liz Hurley is a botoxed liposuctioned idiot (imho)

I agree with you there, turquoise. Did anybody see how ridiculous she looked for Elton John's White Tie and Tiara do?

Thanks for all your reassurance, ladies. We've just come back of holidays and I just downloaded the pictures and I must admit for the first time in years I see photos of myself and think "yep, quite nice"

Am now ttc and will ruin it all again shortly...

I'm just a bit shorter than you and the same size I think. I do get in 12's occaisionally though and my jeans in a 14 are loose, yay! I would rather be more 12 than 14, but at the same time DP dosen't seem to mind what weight I am (he gets upset that I do with him ) and life is for living, not for dieting. Be whatever makes you happy.

Depends on so many things - height, shape, whether you've just had a baby etc!
I guessed that PK was being bitchy about AT because she likes to think of herself as one of those gorgeous "skinny" "fashionable" things - you know the sort (i.e. not normal people like the rest of us) and Liz Hurley...? Well - there's no answer to that

14 sounds good if you are 5ft 10.

As for Liz Hurley - I've seen her close up in RL and she is very very thin. She must have a hell of a time staying at that weight - she used to be much curvier (and looked much better).

I saw a pic of Victoria Beckham, taken during her last pregnancy - she always hid her bump, but her face was much fuller and I thought she looked so much prettier and younger than she does usually.

wasn't there a thread the other day about LH eating only 2 lettuce leaves per day or something if she wanted to wear a bikini?

Report
emkana · 04/07/2005 22:29

She eats six raisins at a time, apparently, and goes to bed hungry every night.

I would take no notice of anything Liz Hurley says. She has no grip on reality.

I am 6' and size 14 is fine for me (or would be!)

size 14 is for me 'medium build', i.e. neither slim nor fat.

Nothing wrong with being a size 14. I'm 5'10" and need a 16 top/14 bottems. Think dress size has as much to do with body shape/proportion as weight ie a pre-preg bust size of 34DD plus broad shoulders means I need a size 16 top - most people are pretty shocked when they realise that's the size I need as wouldn't describe me as large at all. Now sporting a 38E chest at 32 weeks pg !

I'm 5ft 8 and (most days) a 14. Some days I'm a 12, some days I'm a 16 And I don't think I'm fat.

But at 5ft 10 you shouldn't give it a second thought. Sounds about perfect to me.

well done you on losing all that weight - i dont seem to have the willpower to lose half a stone -im size 14 i dont feel fat and i dont feel thin either -its probably relative though- but i did used to think i had a big bum pre kids (and i was a 10 (if only !)
think everyone is right in saying that a 14 looks great when your 5 10 im only 5 4 and wish i was 10/12 again(gettin there slowly!)
think you should wear what makes you happy though and b*gger anyone else it often depends on the cut of the clothes and your confidence as to whether you look good not your size

In this month's Red there is a makeover on a woman who has lost weight to be a 14 who is also around your height and she looks absolutely perfect - a wonderful body. If she was 4'10" she'd obviously look a fair bit chubbier. I am 5'8" and a biggish size 16 and I feel very fat and totally uncomfortable because I used to be a consistent 12 before having children has changed my body beyond recognition. TBH I find it very hard to deal with sometimes. I would absolutely love to be a 14 atm.
Btw I hope I don't sound insulting to anyone who is bigger - it's a very personal thing, weight.

And congratulations on losing the weight emkana - and you BK! You sound like you've lost all the baby weight and some.
