Any original ideas for dd's 12th birthday present

This sounds terrible I know but am at a complete loss about what to buy my daughter for her birthday. She is right on the cusp of being too old for toys but too young for ipods and stuff like that. She is quite a young twelve year old so I dont want to push her into anything too old but on the other hand I don't want her to feel I am treating her like a baby.

Anyone else had this problem, any solutions please Mumsnet?

Maybe 12 small pressies? Body shop/teen perfume/cd single/new Harry Potter book etc

You can also get stuff off the net such as No.1 on your birthday/ "on this day" to add to the fun.

I have done this for slightly older kids(young teens) and it seems to go down well. HTH

I always loved anything crafty at that age (you know, packs of beads, make a teddy/model horse/whatever kits.

Or a day at Alton Towers or something?

If she likes crafty things maybe something from here I saw this link on another mumsnet thread and it has some gorgeous cushions etc that she could make for her bedroom.

I got a sewing machine for mine and for the rest of my teens made all my own clothes (I also started getting a monthly allowance to buy my clothes with but could make more and better things myself)...I also made clothes for my older sister (6 years apart) and she paid me ...so weeknights I would be madly sewing ready to have something different to wear out at the weekend...

take her to see a show.i took mine to see His dark materials at The National in london.Pressie of course included day trip to london and meeting BIL for nice lunch. Whole thing came in under £75 which i thought was not terrible! She absolutely loved it and will remeber it for a long time to come.

Sorrel's idea is best so far, i would have appreciated that at 12.

Thank you all so much for your ideas, I gave her what I thought (and she did too) was a fab bunch of pressies. Took your idea PollyLogos and bought 12 presents and then incorporated lots of Mumsnet ideas, including 3 cinema vouchers so she and two friends can go to a film on their own, a silk painting craft set, tickets for My Fair Lady, a book, Hobbit dramatisation tapes, scobbie doos, etc. Would recommend the present per year thing once they get a bit older as they really appreciate the theme. I was really tempted with the pet idea too Elsmommy - might save that for no 13. Thank you all again.
