me. with ds's naming day.
was going to get a registrar and do it properly. Until I found out how much it cost. So that is out the window.

we're doing it ourselves... but need some ideas for some kind of structure.

The service booklet they sent me when I wanted info on registrar was really sick... all this reading of really twee poems and all that kind of thing.

I just want something straightforward.... but don't really know WHAT. Have sent invites out, and we're having food... but need SOMETHING for the day to focus upon...

have just thought about some kind of speech/letting go of balloons (although my mum has a balloon phobia!)....

argh.. i don't know! (not REALLY into the whole "supporting adults" thing... but would like something similar perhaps)

what about making it fun and having some massive kind of game - team building type thing that adults and kids can all get involved in...something that is based around child's birthdate or name - a treasure hunt? Giant snakes and ladders...? um, don't know really, bit tricky!

Hi Starlover,
I went to a naming cermony without a registrar, and from what I remember all the people who they had chosen to be mentors (and there were quite a few) read something out, either a poem, or piece of text. Then everyone was invited to say something to the baby. They all sat at the front, think the parents introduced it a bit. It was quite relaxed. All the mentors chose their own piece, something that meant something to them. Have fun, always meant to do something but never got round to it, bit late for us now I think!

dh... i would like that idea... but most of my family are such party poopers, they'd just moan about having to do anything other than sit on their arses and eat food!!!

like the idea of getting people to choose their own thing to read out though,,,, may put that to them and see how they feel!

any more ideas? keep them coming!

in jewish tradition the naming ceromony, isheld at home, and the rabi holds the baby and gives him/her their name and them the hebrew name.he normally gives a small speech regarding the responsibilities of the parents towards the child, its quite a nice informal event, then of course there is loads of food etc!, you could have something like that, where maybe you have a close friend etc hold your baby and make a speech about you and your partner, then you and your dh could declare that you are officially naming your baby...x and that you hope that all your babies dreams are fulfilled in life etc, nothing to slushy .releasing of some ballonssoundsa nice idea.

a friend had a naming ceremony and she asked everybody to put something on paper such a memory, advice, poem about life, photograph or something and as part of the ceremony people read some of these out and they were put into a box to be opened at her daughters 21st.
