My computer is knackered as it's got a whole heap of downloaded crap on it by my 14 yo sister. I want to do a fresh install of win2000 but i have about 250 photos on it that i desperately dont want to lose.

Can I zip the whole folders and email them to myself or someone and then unzip them when i've got the new os on?

I dont know how to use winzip!

Can you burn them to disk?

Zipping doesn't have much effect on the size of pictures (particularly jpegs). You can download Winzip from here as a 21 day trial.

Can't you just delete all the downloaded cr*p to fee up space so your CDRW works?

IIRC, you have to open Winzip, choose something like "create a new archive" and then you'll have the chance to say which files you want to add.

There's stuff thats been downloaded and saved itself into places i cant even find!! It was also my 18 yo cousin downloading porn so there are lots of things that have downloaded themselves into the system.
Plus it's win98 so 2000 will be better.

Try running something like Spysweeper and ad-aware which might remove some of it for you - I'm thinking you might be able to get your own CDRW working if you get shot of some of the cr*p.

If you have trouble finding something, make sure you can view Hidden Files in "my computer". Something like "tools" "Folder options" and check "view hidden files and folders".

Spysweeper - take the free trial and Ad-Aware.

You could upload at least some of them to a website if your computer isn't too knackered. Lots of places like Ofoto and Photobox will give you quite a lot of storage space which increases once you order prints from them. Picturetrail would be another option; there are lots, actually. It would take quite a while to upload 250 but at least you could get the main ones. The other option would be to buy a USB drive (the little pen/zip things) and store them on there. It's not quite as straightforward using win2000 but it can be done and they are quite cheap.

Have got it down to 130 pics and have figured out how to zip a folder to email - it just has to be less than 16mb so will have to do some rearranging

phew!!!
