My baby nearly choked and it was serious :-(

My DS2 is a bit of a pig and has been known to bite of more than he can chew. This has meant that I have had to pick him up, turn him upside down and hit him on his back to dislodge the offending bit of lunch/dinner on more than one occasion.

Today was different - my DH noticed he was choking and got quite panicky - I said calm down (as I had seen it before), I picked up DS2 and tried to dislodge what I thought was a piece of bread. It wouldn't come out. I started crying and was desparately trying to get the thing out. He was going an awful reddy/purple colour and starting to foam at the mouth by this stage

I eventually managed to get it out with my fingers. It was a sticker - one of the kids must have given him one and he choked on it. I scratched his throat in my attempt to remove the bloody thing and it came out all bloody .

Sorry if this is a bit rambly - the point is that I really knew for just a second how it might feel if my baby was in serious danger and it made me feel sick to my stomach.

The moral of the story is to keep stickers and small items away from small babies and to keep up to date with first aid for babies (thank heavens I did)



God I feel like a bad mother now.

Oh, sweetheart - you must've been terrified. I hope you're all OK now - I'm sure you'll remember it for a much longer time than your DS will. {{{{{hugs}}}}}

dejags, it is a terrible feeling isn't it? I had something similar happen with DD when she was little. I too had read up on baby first aid, I was so glad I did.
Instinct takes over doesn't it?

I still have tears in my eyes - he was obviously terrified. I'll never forget the look on his face.

Having said that the little pig proceeded to finish his lunch as if nothing had happened straight away. Definitely upset me more than him

Oh dejags - sounds awful but you are not a bad mother. I caught ds3 (8months) chewing on some cardboard today in the playroom - it was the box from a pack of snap cards. The boys drop raisins and allsorts too - it's very easy for them to pick something up like that.

My friend's little boy choked on a grape last summer (I posted about it on MN to warn people to always cut them in half). He lost consciousness - they had to call an ambulance - it was very scary.

These things happen, dejags - he's OK, and you're not a bad mother. I can imagine how shaky you must feel though - glass of wine tonight?

Dejags, dd did this when she was a few months old, choked on phlegm and had no idea what to do with it, it's terrifying isn't it? Glad your ds is ok.

Seriously though, I can't thank the lady who taught us baby first aid enough. I have had a bit of practice but when it got really hairy I stayed fairly calm if tearful.

My friend is an ICU Nurse so she checked him out and says he may have a sore throat but it's better than the alternative.

Oh, Dejags, what a horrible horrible fright for you. You certainly are not a bad Mum - I'm sure Mn is shuddering as one in sympathy with you.
It's just so easy, isn't it? Thank goodness you were with him.

I know Blu - he was with DS1's godmother when the kids were playing with stickers, the one which got stuck must have been on his clothes. Thank goodness it didn't happen on the motorway on the way home.

I was becoming lax about certain things with DS2, this has been just the wakeup call we all needed.

dd age 6 and ds and friend age 3 played a game where they each took turns "eating " pieces of lego ... ds friend choked and I had to call an ambulance because he went blue choking, total nightmare his Mum came to find him in the back of the ambulance, thankfully he recovered.

Oh Lemonice, that must have been awful, glad he was ok though, how long did the ambulance take to get to you?

If it was here (Cape Town) he would not have made it, ambulances take a long time to get out to you.
