Organ Donation

I know this won't be everyone's thing but for those who would be happy to donate their organs after death just to make you aware that you can sign up online
here

lots of people are in principle happy to donate organs but don't register or forget to tell their nearest and dearest that they would be happy for this to happen.

It's so important and what's happening to poor misdee just made me think about it some more.

I've already registered a long time ago but recently revisited the issue with my DH so he is sure of my wishes.

Wow KR - I just posted on Misdees thread about this. I'm registered and I hope lots of MN'ers go ahead now too. It's probably something that we all intend doing, but never get around to it.

:0 how thoughtful katierocket. I am sure I have bored you all enough but my sister had a heart and lung transplant when she was 18 and we were always grateful to her donor and her family. A totally selfless thing to do in death

Want to sat thank you fio, you've helped me a lot the last few months with our online chats. your sister sounds amazing.

I already carry a card anyway, but just registered online there to be on the safe side. Thanks for the link
The thing that kind of worries me is that it's a decision that is left ultimately to grieving relatives to make. I'd like to think I die an old lady, and my family respect my wishes - but if I were to die young, my husband may not be thinking rationally IYKWIM

Excellent thread. DH and I have been on the register since the year it began. Our DS1 has cystic fibrosis.. and the only anwser (one the disease gets to a certain stage) is a lung tranplant.. but the majority of people in this situation die due to lack of organs.

Please, everyone, spend a moment of your time to at least consider joining it... for the thousands every year - like Misdee's DH.. who so deserve to live more of their lives and with healthier organs.

There is a lot of it about Did you know (not to Fio who will know!) that one in twenty five of the caucasion population carry the CF gene?

Report
misdee · 19/05/2005 14:33

thats awfully high isnt it? but both parents need to have th gene dont they? (if my remeberence of science lessons are right).

Report
Fio2 · 19/05/2005 14:34

yes sleepyjess, amazing that none of my cousins have ever been tested and my (shithead) father went on to have 6 more children without getting any of his partners tested

dont speak to him btw, i do not appreciate his behaviour at all

Yes that's right Misdee. If both parents carry the gene there is a one in four chance of them having a baby with CF.

Fio2 · 19/05/2005 14:35

yes misdee its recessive

you only have to look at how many people live in just your street alone to imagine how many of them could be carriers
