is this a scam? telephone call to tell me I'd won a 'free' holiday...

A company called us last night to say that we'd won a free holiday. All we had to do was go on it and tell everyone else we'd had a great time, that's how the company do their advertising - word of mouth. Was told to call a number - code for Cambridge - and was assured that was BT and would only cost 10p. This I somewhat sceptically called (where's the catch I asked several times) and was told someone would ring me back in the next 10 minutes with the details. At this point dp got wind, said he'd had the same thing a few weeks back ( I remember vaguely) and decided it was dodgy when they began to tell him, very very slowly, what the holiday was like and the different options etc - he then told them to get stuffed and hung up. Forgot to check our last BT bill to see what we were charged (if anything). The reason he is so wary is that his mum apparantly was called by the same kind of company, telling her she'd won a holiday, and when they called her back, they somehow managed to reverse the charges and she got an enormous phone bill and had to end up changing her phone number.
Does anyone know of this and is it a scam? They called again this morning saying the same thing. Have not called back. If it is a scam, who do I report it to?

yes i think it is..have had this a few times and now keep getting one saying we have won to go to florida..funny how they change the destination

I vaguely remember that this is a scam, a big one. But I am embarrassed to admit I can't remember who to report it to.

Definitely a scam. We have calls like that too, and letters through the post - had one once that promised a free holiday if we just went along to a 1 hour presentation to hear all about it, and there was a creche provided and free refreshments etc etc. When we got there, there was no creche, no refreshments and it lasted 3 hours - and when we said naff off we ain't doing it, they became extremely nasty, and virtually shoved us out of a back door where all the bins were, it was all very unsettling.

We had something like this but didnt get charged anything for the calls. When you called the number back they basically said you had to collect the tickets from some kind of open seminar (which in itself sounds dodgy) and children were not allowed to attend. I think it is some kind of holiday club hard sell - once they get you there in person it is hard to say no.

Same thing happened to us a few weeks ago. It was all free etc etc and when the details came through we had to attend a seminar miles away, couldn't bring children had to pay taxes etc. I didn't go and sent a letter of complaint to the Manager - no reply so far.
