After yet another crap weekend here in Blackpool my partner and I have decided to move. We are torn between Leeds and Manchester, I think I prefer Leeds but mainly because I lived there before and loved it (sadly only for a year)

Which location would mumsnetters prefer.

We want to be somewhere with a good primary school, easy access to the city but quite a rural yet cosmopolitan feel if there is such a thing!!!

When I lived in Leeds before I lived in Headingley which I loved but that was in mny single days, not sure if I could put up with all the students now!

Our budget is quite tight up to about £150,000 and we want three bedroom and a garden.

Besides I don't think we can afford to live in Headingley

May I suggest Huddersfield? I moved here more or less by mistake (the right job came up) but it's very pretty ('Last of the Summer Wine' country, all stone cottages & dales & moors & what have you ); it's considerably cheaper than Leeds/Manchester; & the Trans Pennine Express will have you in Leeds in 25 minutes or Manchester in 40!

Admittedly the town centre is slightly grotty, but all the necessary shops are present & correct - you just might not choose it for a sophisticated Saturday night bar crawl, iykwim...

Oh & the schools aren't bad at all. In fact, we've got mates from Dagenham who moved down the road from us specifically because they wanted more house for their money/better schools following the arrival of their dd.

I used to live in Headingley too, but that was when I was a student...

have seen quite a lot in huddersfield and ut is actually very reasonable. When i lived in Leeds, about 6 or 7 years ago quite a few friends moved out to Huddersfield to take advanatage of cheaper property and were surprised to find a few good restaurants and bars.

THanks

Well, we're in Paddock - handy for town, quite cheap but nice houses, big park, local primary is 'improving' but Reinwood is supposedly better, best state 6th form in the country (Greenhead College).

I've got friends in Holmfirth who love it - it's where LOTSW is filmed, but also has lots of cool bars etc.

We're looking to move out towards Holmfirth, Meltham or similar in the nest few years, as our need to go clubbing in Leeds/Manchester seems to have strangely diminished since ds turned up 9 months ago...

I live in manchester, but most of my friends are at uni in leeds. Headingly is absolutely jam packed full of students and i know i couldnt live there, my friends who do live there say they wouldnt either when they are no longer students. I think outskirts of leeds is cheaper than manchester, leeds is better for a night out, but generally speaking i prefer manchester.

where in manchester were you thinking of?

I haven't been snubbing you our internet has been on the blink!

I don't know Manchester at all Faircakes so wouldn't know where to start looking for somewhere to live. My partner grew up in manchester but that was on estate in Hyde which we have not put on the top of our desirable neighbourhood list. Sorry if I have offended people!

I nearly moved to Manchester about six years ago, my husband at the time wanted to get a house on Salford Quays but it never appealed to me to be honest. I have never been a fan of Manchester ( sorry once again if I ahve offended you all again) but I ahve been a few times recently and can see that a lot of work has been done on the city centre in particular and I love to visit just not sure if I would live there.

i think if it ties in wit dp new job we will head for leeds way, but it all depnds on the job offers he gets.

I was speaking to a friend the other night about Headingley, she has been back to Leeds recently and said Headingley is more student dominated than it was when we lived there. I suppose I was harking back to a time when I was carefree and happy and thought that my moving back there I might recapture some of that feeling, not much chance though with a toddler and a mortgage!

Whereabouts in Manchester are you Fairy cakes? Would you recommend it?

this thread is very interesting! when i have qualified we are looking to move back up north, my husband is from York and is desperate to go back home, although not actually planning on returning to York. we had been looking at Headingley in Leeds, as we have friends ther, but may reconsider that now and look towards huddersfield. property prices are not a concern as we will be renting and able to afford the same as we pay down here (£1000 pcm)which from my research so far will get us something considerbaly larger than we have now (3bed semi).
so come on all you leeds girls more info on good area to live in leeds!

cos that where we all lived as students and it brings back fond memories! but obviously not so suitable for families, i live in quite a studenty area at the moment and ideally would like to move somewhere more family friendly.
so thanks for the suggestions will take a look at the rental properties.
i'm sure that twinsetandpearls will find it helpful as well

i lived in yorkshire as asmall child before moving back to wales, started in herts went onto yorks(due to fathers job)we lived in Dewsbury, which i remember as being lovely, then Moortown in leeds, my aunt lived in huddersfield at the time, i believe though that apparently Manchester isquite up and coming, and thereare some very desirable suburbs there(they set Cold Feet in Manchester), i have only ever been to the Trafford Centre in Manchester so cant comment on it!
