Tipping hairdressers... how much is right?

Can anyone tell me what they do re: tipping? I have just come back from a trip to my hairdressers where I am now a regular client. I get on very well with my hairdresser and it costs around £35 a cut. However, I never know what to do about a tip. I think say a couple of quid seems mean and yet the hair cut isn't cheap. Can any hairdressers maybe give me their opinion? Would anything less than £3 seem mean and what about the girl who washs the hair? It seems mean not to tip her but then you end up paying another £10 for the haircut all in all. Any advice anyone????Thanks .

I'm interested too. My cut and colour costs around £70 every 7 or 8 weeks - and as you say - you would be adding another £10 on top. I usually leave a £2 coin and scuttle off and hope its not too mean.

I used to work in a hairdressers and £2 should be more than adiquate(sp?)

A tip is nice, but I don't think most people expect it, so don't feel you have to - especially if you arn't happy with the service.

I feel just as guilty when I don't leave a tip for the girl who does my facials. Never even gave it a thought till my friend left a fiver for her girl!!

Iused to tip a couple of quid -- until the last time I went to get hari done and it cost 123 quid!! Still shocked about it! Was lovely but they would have to tip me to get me back there!!

I get cross about tipping only certain people -- I have had fab service at Tescos and most of them only earn minimum wage but you would never tip them...

I leave £3 - £5 depending on how pleased I am and how nice the hairdresser is! once last year I had my hair done by a real misery guts who for various reasons I didn't think was very good so I left no tip at all and I could see she was annoyed. I would say around 3 - 5 pounds is ok.

Mancman - £123!!! Do you live in London by any chance?????? Did you have gold highlights! Wow, no wonder you didn't tip, you are right they would have to tip you to come back..... I think maybe I will stick with £3.00. I always bring a few bottles of wine back from my holidays and at Christmas etc give stuff to the other staff so I guess I am not too bad....

I was a trainee hairdresser and all through did hundreds of hair washes and was always anoyed when people only ever tipped the hairdersser and forgot about me I was the one with sore hands! I usually give £5 and tell them to split it however between them at least then everyone gets a little something!
