Saying thank you when driving

hunkermunker · 21/04/2005 10:29

Do you? Somebody stops to let you through, you drive through said gap and what do you do? Drift on, barely recognising that somebody else has stopped for you? Or do you smile and lift your hand off the steering wheel?

If you don't say thank you - why ever not? What's stopping you?

I smile and wave my hand

I smile and lift my hand to say thanks and to acknowledge people thanking me.

I get annoyed when you go out of your way to let someone through and they just ignore you.

I do acknowledge people but not always if it is my right of way anyway.

I got hooted at today for indicating and stopping on the road today so my ds could hop out and post a letter. There was no reason why I couldn't stop (no painted lines etc) and I did indicate I was stopping but, because the woman behind me had to wait a moment before she could overtake me, she hooted me!

Seems to me, some people should read their highway code again.

Hello JM! How are you?

It's just SO annoying when people are oblivious - it makes me wonder what else they're not seeing... Worries me that fellow road users can be so unaware of things!

I always acknowledge drivers who are helpful - I always let people in too and WOW does it bug me when they sail by without a thank-you!!
No need for it...

My real bug bearer is those impatient drivers who overtake me when turning right!!! - I have to wait a mere 42 seconds for the electric gates to open fully and they are just too impatient to wait - the amusing thing is that if drivers didn't speed to the extent they do outside our house we wouldn't need to have gone to the expense of electric gates - we could park up and open them BUT I'd be dead by now!!

I wish there was a sign for SORRY - so when you do make a genuine mistake, you can acknowledge that you are an idiot and you are sorry.....instead of people thinking you are just a tosser or a really bad driver.......

I wave both ways too. I also say "thank you", in a strange clipped falsetto voice, the kids find this very amusing but I can't not say it

I do - and I try to bite my tongue when someone does something not so nice. Part of my policy to make ds a nice young man!

Beachyhead - LOL at sorry sign - I know what you mean

I do a weird finger thing - keep hand on steering wheel but raise up first finger whilst simultaneously inclining my head forward in a gracious nod. Try it. Its quite satisfying and more upmarket than a full hand wave. I save the full hand wave for when I drive badly, that's my 'sorry, being a nob' gesture.

scottishmumto1 · 21/04/2005 12:30

i give a wave and a smile if someone stops for me.
i have been known to give the finger if people dont respond if i have stopped for them. it really pisses me off, it doesnt cost anything to give a little wave

I always lift my hand if somebody stops for me.
My boys are always asking "Who are you waving to Mummy?" !

Dahlia, I do the steering wheel raised finger thing too - I'm posh and polite

I also say thank you when someone lets me over the road as a pedestrian at a zebra crossing, etc. Why don't some people acknowledge that they're holding up a stream of traffic?!

I always wave thank you, if they've let me out onto the road then I wave in my rear view mirror. Otherwise I lift my hand and wave.
I thank drivers who stop for me to cross the road when I'm walking as well.
When driving down country lanes I thank people who let me pass, including pedestrians. I'm generally quite cheery when I'm out and about and think that other people are cheery back- always say please and thank you in shops as well

Is it only me that thinks BMW drivers rarely say thank you...and female BMW dirvers never ever say thank you.

...maybe its just where I live?

Report
QueenEagle · 21/04/2005 20:39

OOhhh, I do that lift one finger gesture too at the same time as nodding and actually saying "Thank yooooo".

If someone lets me pull out in front of them I flash my hazard lights a few times to acknowledge it, as i drive a huge mini bus type car and they can't see me wave in the rear view mirror.

I am the master of sarcastic yet polite comments and it makes my kids pee their pants!
