HELP anyone! please

I kept getting emails from some woman who i do not know on my computer she said she was talking to me through Instant messenger on aol.Can they get your email address off that or is it only if you give it to them? Also someone called a sexy babe just tried to instant message my computer i told her that ive never talked to her before How could she have got my IM name otherwise? does anybody know ,because im accusing my BF of talking to these women he says he hasnt but how are they getting onto my system.Some advice im really confused!

Have you recently joined any websites or boards using your AOL email address?

I used to get this on AOL, always just after signing up on new boards. Just put the user id on your banned list.

i sometimes get emails off people who are trying to send spam, if you want to know if your dh has been speaking to anyone or what he was up to, you do know you can click on the 'go' button on the top and that will show you history of what he done on aol...i remember your thread from last time,

if you have there email address, then that is also there screen name, you can check out if they have a profile

it may be worth remembering that people will IM you if you have a members profile as thats how spammers find your email address to send you crap

mummyof2...if its the same screen name that is emailing you, then you can be a bit sneaky...IM them next time they are online and see what they got to say for themselves...you will soon suss out if its a spammer or someone who thinks they are speaking to your dh

spammer is a word i use, not sure if its used by anyone else

correct word is spam....its basically the equivalent of junk mail being sent through your post

spam is when its sent to you via email...sometimes you can get a 'spam IM' they will IM you and usually when you respond, theres a 'link' to click on, which leads to there site, and usually its a porn site

unfortunatly you dont have to visit no porn sites to get these people finding out your screen name, because like i said, if you have a members profile they can find you that way

if you dont have a members profile then you dont get many spam mails

A spammer sends thousands of mails like the ones you describe (or sometimes ones about buying software, being a bigger man etc) to random email addresses. It sounds like you are on someone's list and there's nothing you can do about it - better spam filtering may help, but the only way to stop it is to change email addresses.

As to how they got your address, it might be an unscrupulous message board, or it might just be they tried a random address ([email protected] for example) and got lucky.

if you visit particular sites, they can get your email address from just visiting it, and they can send you stuff

with aol, there is a facility where you only receive mail off people on your buddy list/address book

everyone else is blocked

Spam mail is a real nuisance and often the 'titles' of the messages are very alarming and explicit.
I have two e-mail addresses. One I use soley for my friends and the other for general use. The second one unfortunately has tons of crappy spam messages on it.

it just verifies you're a live address and opens you to more spam

just delete it if you don't recognise the sender

mummyof2, you posted before your concerns of your bf going into chatrooms

i have been on chatrooms, and if i dont want dh to find out, i would use another screen name which was passworded so that i didnt get caught, as it happens dh has no probs with that

i think what im trying to say is that if your bf is using chatrooms surely he would have gotten himself his own screen name and not one you share?

if you really want to know what he is up to, click on the history bar (the white bar at the top of aol page says 'go'..click on it and it will list the things you been doing)

IT sounds like spam. I bet your BF is innocent. Or, strange as it sounds, it can be a confussion. I get a lot of e-mail directed to a person that has my same name but is 15 yrs younger and lives in Argentina. And she must be a fox because everyone is inlove with her, I have received even marriage proposals for her, and when I tried to explain that I was another person with the same name some people has rebuffed as if I was playing with their feelings . So, now I just read her mail, have a laugh about her very interesting life and then send the messages to the bin.
