Am I being an awkward so and so?

As some of you must know by now we live in a rented flat that is up for sale. When they told us about us, the agents said they expected us to show people around the flat. I kind of begrudge this cause it's not ours to sell, it's not in our interest, and what is the landlord paying the agent for if not to show them around? There is someone they have organised to come around tomorrow for a time which isn't really convinient for me, but won't be showing them round. Am I just bitter?

they get paid a fee to show people the flat

I would call your landlord and snitch on them .. lazy buggers

ooh no i feel the same,,so they expect you to make sure it is tidy etc and show people round whilst paying rent ,,arrrrrghhhhhh hope they dont do this to us ,,

I think that's terrible. Why should YOU show them around, it's not your flat after all, the estate agent or the landlord should show them around surely?? I ring up and complain about it.

or they should pay you the fee for showing them around, and alass pay less rent.

Ainsmum, that was my plan before we found our new flat! The landlord lives abroad, so is reliant on the agents acting for him. He offered to drop our rent by a third to get us to stay here when we handed in our notice. If he had done that when he screwed us over by putting the flat up for sale 4 and a half months after we moved in, we would have been happy to help. I said to the agent I wasn't very happy. But they have made it a time outside of their office hours. I don't want to seem like I am stopping people from viewing, but think I might say ok but next time you need to arrange it with you accompanying. Can't do much else without looking a total cow, can I?

Usually in a tenancy agreement it will say that you have to allow access so that potential new tenants can look around (usually in the last month or so?) but you don't have to show them around. I wouldn't do it either.

what exactly does it say, that sounds like an unusual clause

you could say you are willing to show it, but set times and dates that are convenient to you -- ie once a week at 7am that no-one will want to turn up to

Don't think you are under any obligation other than to allow them access at 24 hours notice. The landlord could always show them around himself or the agent.

ok, i did mis read it. over th other side of the page it says i must allow them with 24 hrs notice. do you think i should show this once?

I phoned and said I wasn't happy to. I remembered that I wasn't best pleased with the agents anyway. They put up pictures of our flat's interior on the web, with all our posessions on show (lap top etc) without asking permission. And then yesterday I had a weird bloke trying to get into the flat, wondering if the two things might be related?

No, I think you should call and insist they take down the pictures from the web and tell them that you insist they show people around and give you at least 24 hours notice as your lease states

Surely it's not in their interest to have you show prospective buyers round?? After all, they would have no control over what you tell them and you could put off loads of buyers and still move out, leaving an empty (and consequently less saleable) property.

I would tell them that they need to ensure it is convenient to you before they make appointments, that they give at least 24 hours notice and that they show people round themselves. Not a lot they can do if you refuse to cooperate, is there?

I did want to make the case about the pictures, but DP said not to bother. We're moving out in just over two weeks now. Dosen't seem worth the effort. Worried they will dock our deposit just to be spiteful. They have re -arranged for saturday afternoon with an agent, and maybe he'll be the first and last!! Thanks for all your help.
