We're with NTL and we had a similar problem with modem one evening recently, when checked none of phones were working either! Of course couldnt ring them to complain because they shut at 8 or 9 pm - what!!!!!! Everything was ok next morning.
Have you tried unplugging modem connections at both ends eg wall socket and back of pc and plugging them back in again - does sometimes work honest!

Our upstairs phone socket used to do that. Phone would work perfectly but dial up connection was impossible. The socket doesn't work at all now, so it was obviously that was dodgy. That was with BT, though, not NTL.

Well the only number in the dial up setting should be the one you've put there. If its anything else take it out straight away. What if you put the right number in - does it work then? There are spyware/adware type thingies which do make you dial up to incredibly expensive numbers without you being aware of it. If this is happening get onto NTL to get them blocked (or something like that anyway - sorry not sure of fine details just know it happens!)

ntl info on rogue diallers

I think St. George has this on the head.

Rogue spyware dialer is where my money's at.

Piece of scum software dials a porn site and costs LOADS OF MONEY per minute.

You defnitely want to phone and get them to check your last few calls.

You can register on BT's Web site (if you have a BT line) to look at your statement online. There you can see numbers dialed and cost.

We got stung for £20 in two calls, only a few minutes long.

If in any doubt, and I don't want to be alarmist or PC bash here, unplug your computer modem from the wall socket and run your spyware / virus checker.

If you find I'm talking crap, please accept my apologies for any alarm caused. Removing these 'stealth' programs is a GRAND pain in the ass.

You will probably need several different spyware scanners.

Let them clean your PC and then re-run them after reboot as they often find more things (or there are auto-launch progs etc.).

You may need to reinstall Windows to remove this, depepending on exactly which dialler, and which version of Windows you have and how comfortable you are running regedit, checking your startup files etc.

If you search my current posts I've been helping Willow2 and KatieMac to understand more about Macs, and if you're considering moving platform (from Windows) you might want to read the threads and get a feel for why I think Mac / OS X is better than Windows and which hardware might be most suitable for you.

There are plenty of Windows users happy with their systems, so perhaps they want to come on and help you remove this ? !!!!!!

How about Spybot? (www.spybot.info)

My recommendation is clear: Buy a Mac and avoid all this sh*te as life is too short.

However, I am a kind soul and recognise the misery which spyware causes. You want to try either / both of:

Spyware Search and Destroy

and

Ad Aware from Lavasoft

Careful googling 'spyware' as many of the links are to sites which will dump more spyware on your PC.

If you run Windows you want to probably also run a Firewall and keep your anti-virus software up-to-date. I gave up on Windows years ago so cannot give you up-to-date recommendations for these.

My pleasure.

If you want to be bored, search archives for my name in the last few days and you'll find two threads about choosing Macs. I'm turning into a friggin Apple evangelist !
