After the budget weddings thread the other day and newbarnsleygirl mentioning her [non tacky] gretna green wedding I have provisionally booked mine for Saturday 16th July this year!!!!! I rang up and had no chance of getting a saturday until next year but then they got back to me with a big cancellation

Anyone other gretna brides here???

Little tip for you Pecka make sure you get the bridal suite at the Hotel if you do the package. When they book it they'll probably get you a double room which they did with us but because we were staying 2 nights they gave us the bridal suite for no extra charge.

I meant to add, if they do ring them up and they should change it for you.

Well, after reading your post it got my mind ticking then I was at a party on Saturday and was talking about our plans (or lack of) and they said "I would go to gretna green" so that set me off too!

Spent a few hours on the net trawling gretna package sites and other discussion forums and came across The Mill Forge . Here you can get married at the Forge then have a meal and stay over at the Mill. I called them up this morning and was told there was no chance until I got the cancellation call. It is a 14.30pm wedding and 16.00pm meal which takes you through to about 18.30pm and then (and I love this bit) the hotel puts on a disco every saturday and everyone who has married that day can all join in!!

It looks great. That's just up the road from where I got married.

Be warned there'll be lots of tourists wanting to take your photos!

In Gretna generally or in that place I chose?

What does it look like "in the flesh"?

In Gretna itself.

We actually got married at the original Blacksmiths.

Let me try this link,
Gretna

Sorry it didn't work.

It's Gretnaweddings.com

Mill Forge is where all the tourists go so there might be a couple of coaches there and if I remember there is a Gretna Green sign right opposite.

Sorry, I really don't want to upset you but...

Mill Forge is the make up anvil IYKWIM with the tourist shop.

The blacksmiths is the original bona fide wedding place.

The grounds at the Blacksmiths are lovely and you get great photos.
You also can choose from the actual blacksmiths workshop, the blacksmiths cottage or a suite to be married in.

Are you still having meatballs and gravy? Or eels and mash? Or tripe? Can't remember what it was but I remember a big debate on it!

God I feel awful now!

Are you bothered by that?

TBH I never knew that until we went there, just want you to be aware of whats there.

My mum and dad got married there anddidn't even realise you could get married at the anvil so they went to the registry office at Gretna. My mum was gutted when they found out.

Newbarnsleygirl - dont worry you wont upset me - hmmmmmmm so does it look really crappy im not TOO bothered about it being the touristy bit (altho i would rather it wasnt) but if the actual place is ok im not bothered) i like the idea of being married, having do and staying all in the same place

hmmmm I have got it so wrong havent I - I thought it was the blacksmiths bit that was the touristy bit

Don't be daft, you haven't got it wrong at all.

I just wanted to tell you all the places there are. As I was unaware of it and like I said before, so was my mum.

The place is lovely, and I'm sure the famous Gretna sign is right opposite it.

Yeah it's lovely honestly.

We got invited to the disco but before we knew it it was too late and we missed it.

Are you having family with you?

Report
Peckarollover · 29/03/2005 22:22

Yes, about 40 altogether - close family and best friends on each side.
