It is my friend's 40th in a couple of weeks and I have madly said I will bring a karaoke machine (why do i do things like that????). I somehow thought they would cost about £20 .

Does anyone have one??

Do I win long shot of the year award?

Yup

Can you hire one? Maybe from a mobile disco (of which there were many when I was growing up in your neck of the woods, though my information is probably a bit out-of-date!)

can you hire them?

and what the hell are they anyway?

Is it just a cd, but how do you know the words?

can you tell I have never done it before but I saw it in Lost in Translation and it looked like fun

Enid, you can get a karaoke game on Playstation, have you got one? Can you borrow one? The game is called Singstar and we've got it if you want to borrow it, or maybe there's a mumsnetter nearer you who has it? 2 mics come with it. So you need a tv, a PS2, this game. There are only about 20 songs but I did particularly well with Blondie's Heart of Glass Here it is, does it look suitable?

There's a track listing there on Amazon, enough to keep a load of thirtysomethings happy I reckon! Careless Whisper and Like A Virgin, what more could you want?

Enid, apparently the mics aren't that light but yes, it is postable (or if you're going to be in this direction I could meet you) when do you need it?

Looks like you ought to get that Singstar party one too for a 40th!

It is surprisingly good fun: it plays you back afterwards and rates you compared to the original! I think I was 98% Debbie Harry

We had dance mats kids vs adults (2 x PS2s set up on a cinema screen sized wall with a projector) and it was hilarious! Great fun.
