That's a breach of confidentiality Moschops. They shouldn't have read it out in the first place, and definitely not in front of others. I've been a medical secretary for 25 years, but in hospitals not GP surgeries, and one thing you NEVER do is give a patient results as a) you could give the wrong result and the patient worries (as in your case) and b) you don't have the knowledge to back up the implications of the result. It's a complete no-no.
I deal with GP receptionists a lot and yes, there are some that are lovely and helpful, but there are an awful lot that are rude jobsworths. I don't think though that there's any excuse for them being rude to people. I've put up with a fair amount of abusive and rude people, especially in my current job in a drug and alcohol clinic. You just have to accept that people are going to be like that, not rise to it, stay professional and do your best to hep them. I've sworn at people many a time once I put the phone down! If they've plucked up courage to get a referral to us and are feeling uncertain and scared about it, the last thing they need is me being rude and unhelpful, it might put them off coming to us for treatment. I'm constantly having to explain to people why they're having to wait so long for appointments and treatment. They want it now, we can't offer it because of demand, I understand that and if I was in their shoes I wouldn't want to wait. Empathy is what they need, not attitude.
