Boys names - quick poll

Don't know what sex I'm having but we're struggling to pick a boys name. All seem to be "taken" - in fact 2 potentials have been taken in last 2 days!

But, bit shy about posting this now, we both like teh name...Jesse.

Will he get laughed at (You big jessy) or have a lifetime of saying "Yes, Jesse, you know, just like Jesse James"

Opinions please.

i like it tinker. think it would be more of an issue in some parts of the country eg north where it's more commonly used. do you have any other potentials?

Hmm, yes, I think he'll get laughed at. Although You Big Jessy isn't used that much these days so maybe it'll have completely died out by then?! Ditto Jesse James, who he anyway? (I do know the name but nothing else)

Hmmm - don't think I'd go there, Tink!

Why can't you have one of the names that's "taken"? Would the parents mind or does it make you feel like a copycat?

I like it, but would hesitate to use it, especially as Jessica is a popular girl's name and is often abbreviated

Try it out on your family and see what they think. My sons have unusual names and the first response after ds3 was born from both my mum and dad was "can't you change the name?" Not that made me wish I had chosen something else, but you can rely on your family to be open and then you can gauge your reaction to their reponse, IYSWIM. Frankly, I think some people would call your son a big jessy but maybe he would have the strength of personality to rise above that. I like it, FWIW.

I came across a Gabriel the other day and he has a slightly older cousin called Gabrielle - the mothers are twin sisters - dunno if they have any issues!

I like it - a lot BUT I do think the big jessy thing could be a prob. (although maybe this is an old fashioned phrase anyway?)

Well, we're in the north so...it's my first thought.

One taken one was a once close friend and other is colleague - don't like to be a copycat. Patrick was one of teh options.

Not sure I'm brave enough to disclose my other options yet, what if they're all laughed at?!

I like Gabriel much more than Gabrielle, strangely.

Love name threads! Have you got final choices yet, lockets?

DD2 has the same name as an ex-friend's daughter, who was born about a year before her - it was my suggestion when we were discussing names (before becoming ex-friends, obv!) and I was always a bit miffed that she'd taken it so felt perfectly entitled!

Patrick is lovely.

Does DD have any input?

Tinker · 15/03/2005 13:29

Patrick is lovely and is a family name but think it would be a bit weird especailly as (long story) relations between friend and I are a little, erm, difficult. She wouldn't liek it and I wouldn't in reverse.

Do we know your boy choice, lockets?

Tink, I know you are joking, but there was a Gaby in DS2's class and she ran rings round him in Y6 so I bear a grudge!

I'm not even thinking about girls names atm because like so many may just write 20 down and pick out of a hat.

Do like Gabriel and would definitely get my mother's approval (Catholic ) but has had teh wrinkled nose response from boyfriend.
